Cross country: MoHi’s Claire Green holds off Ned’s Kelley Robinson to win Pat Patten

Claire Green went into her finishing kick, but she could feel Kelley Robinson and Elise Cranny on her heels. So Green reached down and found another gear.

“They were right with me,” Green said. “It was anyone’s race all the way to the hill. I gave it what I got and I guess it was enough.”

Green held on to win the Pat Patten Invitational with a time of 19 minutes, 10 seconds, one second ahead of Nederland’s Robinson.

Green, Robinson and Cranny broke away from the rest of the field early and made it a three-person race. Robinson tried to overtake Green in the final 100 yards but ran out of real estate.

“I tried to push it on the last part of the hill and then kick in, but she had a nice sprint,” Robinson said. “She’s an amazing runner. I tried to go and didn’t have enough to catch her.”

More important to her, the Monarch Coyotes won the team competition.

“Our real goal was a team win,” Green said.

While winning the individual title wasn’t easy, the Coyotes far outpaced the rest of the field to win the team title.

Ashley Litoff was sixth with a time of 19:54, Taylor Floming (19:59) was seventh, Kaitlyn Benner (20:05) was eighth and Alyssa Reese (20:16) took 11th.

“They were running really well on a hot day and a tough course,” Monarch coach Kent Rieder said.

On the boys side, Fairview edged Broomfield to win the team title. Monarch was third and Centaurus was fourth.

The Knights were happy to capture the title on what is considered their home course.

“This is home for us. It’s always a big deal to run at home,” Fairview coach Josh Glaab said. “We definitely use that to our advantage. We know every turn on here.”

That paid off.

“This is our home course and we wanted to all be in that top group and see how we could hold up,” said Ricardo Kaempfen, who finished eighth with a time of 17:04, four seconds and one spot behind teammate Brad Ziegler. “You’ve got all the people cheering for you. It’s awesome.”

The boys individual race was tight until the finish.

Monarch’s Kirk Webb led into the final turn but Moffat County’s Alfredo Lebron sprinted past him down the stretch to take the title. Lebron’s time of 16:18 was a second faster than Webb, who was the runner up in the Pat Patten for the second straight year.

Chandler Reid of Centaurus finished third.

Ben Forsee of Broomfield was fourth after running what he considered a subpar race.

“It seemed to get away from me around the 2-mile mark,” Forsee said. “That’s where I started dying a little bit and the other guys started speeding up. I think I could have run a better race. I didn’t know what was up today. It happens. I can’t place it all on one thing.”

While winning this race was a priority, the Eagles know they have bigger goals — the 4A state meet at the end of the month.

“I think our team is shaping up really good,” Forsee said. “Our goal at the end of the month is to be the state champ, but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
