Football: Suspensions, penalties costly for Justice

The Justice football team waited four weeks to play its first game.

The Phoenix might have wished for one more week off after Saturday’s showing.

Missing several starters, Justice was overmatched against North Park, falling 40-0 at Boulder High’s Recht Field.

The Wildcats scored on six of their seven possessions with a good mix of rushing and an air attack.

North Park finished with 359 yards of total offense, with 265 coming on the ground.

Meanwhile, Justice started the game with five straight penalties and struggled with its lineup of players stepping in at new positions. Flags littered the field as Justice committed 12 for 85 yards and North Park added another 40 yards of penalties.

One bright spot for the Phoenix was quarterback Alexis Alday, who was making his first start at the position.

The senior passed for 89 yards while gaining another 88 on the ground. Alday scrambled for a 71-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that would have added to his rushing total but it was negated by a holding penalty.

“When your whole starting offense is standing on the sideline it makes it difficult,” Justice coach T.J. Cole said. “Then you have to send in a bunch of freshmen who don’t have a clue what was going on and we just struggled.”

Several of the Phoenix starters were suspended for the game because they did not accomplish their requirements in the classroom.

Cole believes if he can get the right commitment from his team it will have what it takes to be successful.

“If we can get everybody on the same page, we have the talent to still be top two or three in our league,” the troubled coach said. “But we are just going to work with what we have and improve week by week.”
