Volleyball: Skyline showing progress, but drops sixth straight

LONGMONT — This has been a different type of season for Skyline volleyball coach Will Rozum.

The Falcons are used to winning and going deep into the playoffs. But, every starter from 2010 graduated. In fact, every player from the 2010 varsity roster except for one, current senior Kelsi Fleming, graduated.

“We have a lot of inexperience,” said senior setter Chelsey Curtis, who didn’t play volleyball a year ago. “I’ve never set before and we have a couple freshmen and sophomores. It’s definitely a rebuilding year.”

The rebuilding continued on Thursday, as the Falcons dropped a home match to Fort Morgan 3-0. The visiting Mustangs took charge early to win 25-14, 25-17, 25-15.

“(The inexperience) showed a bit,” Rozum said. “We were just off tonight. We had a lot of lineup changes and some adjustments had to be made.”

Junior Deandra Elcock played, but was hobbled with a knee injury, and several others were out of the lineup. That certainly hurt the Falcons, who struggled to stop the Mustangs’ attack, led by Hallie Lebsock (10 kills), Heather Coup (eight kills) and Brianna Frick (six kills, four blocks).

Thursday’s loss was the sixth in a row for the Falcons (3-7, 2-4 in the 4A Tri-Valley League).

Still, Curtis and Rozum aren’t down. The Falcons knew they would take some lumps this season, but they hope the growing pains are making them better.

“It’s been exciting, and I think it’s exciting to have a chance to build up and get back to that level,” Rozum said. “We’ve got new kids, we’ve got some young talent that can be developed and turn back into that powerhouse.

“I still think we can make the playoffs this year. That’s still our goal. We’re fighting for that No. 5 seed. I think we’re going to be quite good. We’ve made progress.”

Curtis will graduate after this year, but she’s hoping to get the Falcons on a winning track before she leaves.

“I feel like we definitely have potential,” Curtis said. “We just need to click together because it’s just not happening yet. We’ll get there. I believe it.”
