GREELEY — Tuesday certainly wasn’t the best day Alexander Dawson’s golf team has had on the course this season.

The Mustangs, however, were good enough to win the Class 3A Regional title at Boomerang Golf Course. It was the first-ever regional crown for Alexander Dawson, which finished second a year ago.

“Based upon the way the kids were playing all year long, they didn’t have their best rounds today,” Mustangs coach Arnold Lewis said. “Things didn’t look great (early), but they really pulled it together.”

Cam Connor finished second individually with a 3-over 75, while Cole Nygren carded a 77 and Peter Hassan a 79. Carson Jones added an 85. The tournament came down to the last hole, as Dawson edged second-place Estes Park, 231-232.

Nygren, who has been Dawson’s top player all year, hit two balls out of bounds on the second hole, finishing with a quadruple-bogey.

“I wasn’t really nervous because to be honest I typically finish rounds better when I’m playing poorly (early),” he said.

Sure enough, Nygren played the rest of the round at 1-over par. Connor, a sophomore, was the team’s No. 5 player last year, so he didn’t get a chance to play at regionals, since only four players tee it up.

“I was pretty nervous, but once I got sort of going and got into the round, it was all right,” he said.

As a team, it was another in a long line of impressive showings this season.

“We’re pretty stoked right now,” Nygren said. “It’s huge. No team at Dawson has ever done it. It was our goal last year to win it. This year, (defending champion Eaton) didn’t play as well and everyone on our team came through.”

The win was especially satisfying for Lewis, who has built his program into a state contender.

“These kids are amazing,” he said. “I wanted this for them so badly because they’ve stepped up so many times throughout the year. I just really, really wanted them to have the opportunity to compete at state. All of a sudden your season is kind of empty if you don’t have the opportunity to go to state.”

No empty feeling for the Mustangs, who figure to be among the favorites for the 3A title next month.

“Regionals is a big deal, but once you get past it, state is really the key part of it,” Nygren said.
