CONIFER — Not much went right for the Centaurus football team on Saturday.

The Warriors offense struggled to find a rhythm the entire first half and the defense didn’t fair so well either.

The Conifer Lobos, on the other hand, came out on fire and never let up, defeating the visiting Warriors 42-20.

The Lobos dominated the line of scrimmage, rushing for 491 yards on 86 carries for an average of 5.7 yards per rush.

“We ran the ball extremely well,” Lobos coach Larry Fitzmaurice said. “The running game was there and we pounded the ball all day.”

Conifer scored on the opening drive when A.J. Eleniewski scored his first of three touchdowns, plunging in from five yards out.

“It didn’t help us very much to have them come out and score on the opening drive,” Centaurus coach Chad Senseney said. “It seemed like our guys kind of had bus legs and for them to score right away like that kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

Conifer added two more touchdowns in the second quarter and held a 20-0 halftime advantage.

Centaurus came out of the intermission and went 80 yards in 10 plays, capped by a 31-yard touchdown reception by Conner Beatly from quarterback David Shald.

But the Lobos took the ensuing possession 77 yards and Eleniewski dove in from the 1-yard line. Conifer added two more rushing touchdowns in the third quarter to extend the lead to 42-7.

The Warriors showed some resiliency though adding two scores of their own in the fourth quarter. Quarterback John Howard hooked up with Samuel Estrella for a 30-yard passing score then found Matu Giltner wide open in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown.

Senseney said the Warriors have plenty to work on before their match up with Faith Christian on Sept. 16.

“We didn’t do a whole lot of things right today,” he said. “We are young and we need to get some things figured out. We’ll get back to work, practice hard and get geared up for Faith Christian.”
