Niwot’s Nick Harris, left, runs to a first-place finish during the St. Vrain Valley cross country invitational at Lyons High School on Saturday. Broomfield’s Ben Forsee, right, was a close second.

LYONS — Niwot’s cross country team is typically one of the strongest teams in Class 4A.

On Saturday, the Cougars proved that hasn’t really changed this fall.

Niwot’s Nick Harris won the Class 5A/4A boys race, while teammate Elise Cranny won the girls race at the St. Vrain Invitational at Lyons High School.

Both Cougar runners were impressive in their season debuts.

“It was the first race of the season, so I felt like I ran strong and felt good,” said Harris, who set a personal record with his time of 16 minutes, 16 seconds. “Getting a win right there was huge, so I’m pretty happy.”

Harris edged Broomfield’s Ben Forsee, while Cranny cruised to the finish with a course record of 18:34. Cranny beat the course record set about 20 minutes earlier by Nederland’s Kelley Robinson, who won the Class 3A/2A girls race in 18:43. Ty Williams of Telluride won the 3A/2A boys race.

Harris and Forsee jockeyed for position throughout the 3.2-mile race, with Harris pulled away in the final kilometer, he said. Forsee finished just 2 seconds back, in 16:18.

“He did all the work, so I have to give him a lot of the credit,” Harris said. “He’s a great runner.”

Forsee was equally respectful of Harris.

“Nick is very good. He just barely edged me out and I hope to beat him next time,” Forsee said.

Harris was most pleased with the team effort, however, and said that was his motivation. The Cougars finished fifth overall, while Broomfield won the team title.

“It’s not really about I do, it’s about what the team does,” he said. “I feel like that’s the only reason I ran fast today is because of our team and our training.”

Cranny, who finished 10th at the Class 4A state meet last year, proved she’ll be one of 4A’s stronger runners again this year.

“When I was going up the hill, we’ve done a lot of hill workouts with our team and I just knew that I could pass everyone,” she said. “I was just really strong on the hill.”

Like Harris, Cranny was pleased with the team performance, as well, as the Cougars finished fifth. The Classical Academy was first.

“Our team is really strong this year, so we all came out and we all did really well.”

Before Cranny took it away, Robinson broke the course record set by Shining Mountain’s Birdie Hutton last year. Hutton, a senior, did not run Saturday.

“I know Birdie pretty well and this is her favorite course, and it was just exciting to come out here and run a good race,” Robinson said. “This course is amazing. I absolutely love it, so it was really fun to just come out and run and just be with my team.”

Boulder junior Madi Lohmann had a solid day, finishing 10th in the 4A/5A girls race. She made up for a disappointing season debut a week earlier, crossing the line in 19:40.

“I feel like I ran really well, a lot better than last week,” she said. “I pushed through the end.”

NOTES: Lyons sophomore Miriam Roberts finished 13th, but said she treated the race more like a workout. “I’m going to go for the RE-1J on Tuesday,” she said. … Brush won the 3A/2A girls title, while Telluride was the 3A/2A boys champ. … Mead’s Morgan Lu was 12th in the 3A/2A girls race.
