Monarch’s Michael Capitelli sends a shot on goal during the first half of the Coyotes 2-1 2OT loss to Bear Creek on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

There is a new attitude for the Monarch boys soccer team.

And that attitude was never more prevalent than on Wednesday night.

After Bear Creek’s Emmanuel Martinez sent a header into the net in the 20th minute, the Coyotes of old might have folded and just gone through the motions the rest of the night.

Especially considering the fact that nothing had gone their way and the Bears were smothering them all over the field

But not this years MHS squad. No, they have a never say die aura about them.

So it was no surprise, when the Coyotes found themselves trailing 1-0 with just under 10 minutes to play, the field teetered towards the Bears goal.

And with just 5:18 left on the clock, Sam Baur sent a through ball that Clyde Glastetter found in perfect position on his right foot to beat Bears goaltender Derek Kipp and knot the game at 1-1.

“We worked hard all night and we were never going to give up,” Glastetter said. “Sam sent a perfect pass in there and it felt good to put it in.”

Unfortunately for the Coyotes, Martinez found the back of the net again in the second overtime to give the Bears a 2-1 victory.

“It just shows that the team has a great attitude this year,” MHS coach Jason Cook said. “Stick in there and lose in overtime is one thing. It’s a lot different that just getting shut out. So that’s big.”

Martinez was spectacular in scoring the winner, splitting two defenders, then beating Coyotes goaltender Sabastian Gabaldon far side for the game-winner.

“Emmanual made a great play because Monarch had all the momentum,” BCHS coach Mike Ackerman said. “We were very fortunate to get out of here with a win today.”

The Coyotes received a stellar performance in net from Gabaldon, who came up with several one-handed diving saves. He was remarkable on the night, finishing with 16 saves.

“He is an incredible goalie,” Cook said. “He has a lot of pressure on his shoulders but Sabastian was incredible tonight.”
