LAFAYETTE — The Broomfield girls softball team scored early, held off two Centaurus rallies and poured it on late to defeat the Warriors 17-8 Thursday at Izzy Salazar Field.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning thanks in part to two errors by CHS.
Broomfield added a run in each of the second and third innings to stretch its lead to 6-1.
Centaurus finally found its stride in the bottom of the third inning when Elizabeth Acosta sent a fastball over the left field fence for a three-run home run cutting the deficit to 6-4.
But the Warriors defense sputtered again in the top of the fourth inning.
A walk and three straight errors allowed BHS to plate three runs and stretch the lead to 9-4.
However, the Warriors weren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
After BHS pitcher Katie Knudsen hit Lexi Hempstead, Sara Neitenbach and Maurissa Ortega both singled and Acosta struck again.
She roped a shot to the gap in right center field scoring three runs, cutting the Broomfield lead to 9-7.
The Eagles answered right back in the top of the fifth inning scoring five runs. Karli Hughes reached on an error and Knudsen, Lindsey Brophy and Shelby Grandt hit three consecutive doubles. Amelia Trotter singled home Grandt and the rout was on.
“We are always aggressive and the girls did a good job at the plate today,” BHS coach Paula Seifried said. “The girls don’t get overly excited either way so they did a good job staying clam and getting the win.”
For Centaurus the loss was a step in the right direction.
“The best part of this game was our hitting,” CHS coach Mike Lujan said. “The girls realized they have the tools to compete with great teams like Broomfield. They really grew up today.”
