LONGMONT — Dylan Wonnacott and the Silver Creek Raptors are at it again.
At Northern Conference Tournament No. 4 on Monday, Wonnacott won his second league tournament with a 2-over 72 at Twin Peaks Golf Course.
The Raptors junior’s 72 was just enough to edge Broomfield’s Nick Reisch by one stroke, and put him in a tie with Reisch for the overall league lead. Wonnacott thought the easily could have taken the lead had he not barely missed several putts that could have dropped his score even lower.
“I had tons of lip-outs all day, and I was burning edges,” said Wonnacott, who is averaging a 70.75 in conference play. “I had a lot of putts that could have dropped and I could have scored a lot better.”
Wonnacott, and matching 74s from teammates Andrew Rademacher-Howe and Ryan Burke, helped tighten the Raptors’ stranglehold over their conference foes. They now lead the overall team scoring by 63 strokes.
“It’s nice to be able to hit bad shots and just go, ‘You know, if I don’t play all that great today, I know somebody will come in and play decent,'” Wonnacott said.
Sean Guderian birdied the par-4 fifth hole and led the Niwot Cougars with a 75, his lowest score of the league season. Luke Toillion was just behind him with a 78.
“I played well, I still made mistakes and I could have played better, but I definitely played well,” Guderian said.
Longmont senior Jared Mannatt led his team with an 82, though he wasn’t happy with the way his round ended.
“It started off OK,” said Mannett, who shot a 37 on the front nine. “After 15 holes, it just started going downhill.”
Mannatt double-bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16, bogeyed 17 and triple-bogeyed 18.
“I just couldn’t hit the ball,” Mannatt said. “It was probably a little fatigue, probably a little mental lapse.”
The Trojans senior was disappointed, but relieved by the fact that each player can drop his highest score. He’ll just have to play up to his potential in the two remaining Northern Conference Tournaments.
