As a young team the past two seasons, Holy Family soccer has had some rocky runs. But with one of their most-experienced and talented rosters in some time, the Tigers expect to dole out lumps, not take them.
The team might not have all the pieces to claim the Class 3A crown right now, but if everything goes as planned and Holy Family shows growth over the season, it might hang with the best its classification has to offer.
“We’ve built high expectations for ourselves, because I believe the boys understand potentially how good they could be,” coach Jim Schuster said. “But they also understand that getting to where we want to be is going to take a lot of work.”
As always, one of the Tigers’ biggest challenges is getting through the Metro League gauntlet. The conference is as testing as ever, punctuated by the expectation that Faith Christian will be a top-10 team in Class 3A. But the Tigers have the personnel to survive a run through the Metro and make it back to the state tournament.
Offense continues to be Holy Family’s strength, with the team boasting one of the state’s top scorers. Preston Arguello finished last season with 20 goals, but the junior forward is not the only arrow in the Tigers’ quiver. Alex Toderica, Erik Celmer and Connor Spelic each have the talent to construct scoring opportunities and put the ball in the back of the net.
Defense was Holy Family’s shakiest area last season, with most of the team’s losses coming from the inability to stop goals. But with the addition of Tucker Schneider, the team might find it easier to slow opponents’ scoring. The keeper is only a freshman, but has more than proved himself on the national stage in the Colorado Rapids Development Academy.
