Cross country preview: Broomfield boys aiming for top of 4A

Broomfield boys’ cross country found its kick in 2010.

Anchored by one of state’s top runners and fueled by a tight team split, the Eagles flew to the front of Class 4A, finishing fourth at the state championship meet. And while the team has its share of challenges, including dealing with a costly graduation, Broomfield still should have the chops to be among the best in 4A.

“A lot is going to depend on that day and everybody turning out their best race at state,” coach Greg Weich said. “But if we do hit, there is no reason why we couldn’t be in the top three.”

Ben Forsee should be the Broomfield boys’ spearhead. The senior produced his team’s best time last season, turning in a 17:00 in the regular season and has shown the potential to be a top-10 state runner. Forsee is far from the team’s only asset; returning state qualifier Kory Skattum and up-and-coming sophomore Ethan Gonzales also have the ability to push for the front of the pack.

Making the Eagle boys even more dangerous is the potential for the squad to produce a split of less than a minute between its lead and final runners.

The Broomfield girls should send a team to state, but might not be in the running for a top spot. The young squad has the potential for a top-10 finish, but has its share of obstacles standing in its way. The most pressing problem Broomfield has is replacing its top runner, who opted out of competition this season.

Even with a steep hill ahead, Broomfield has some runners with the potential to kick up dust. Abby Gardner should enter the season leading the Eagles’ pack, having produced last season’s top time. A little older and wiser this season, Gardner should have the ability to top her 2010 best of 20:20.
