BROOMFIELD — In front of a packed crowd at Legacy High School, Legacy wrestling coach Mike Thompson saw his Lightning defeat the rival Broomfield Eagles 57-22 on Wednesday. His team won four matches by fall, one by decision and four forfeits.

Winning in front of that crowd was a good feeling, but work remains for the high expectations he has for his team.

"We still have a couple of weeks before our final stretch," Thompson said. "We need to get some kids healthy for February. Once we get that, the physical work needs to get done and the mental work needs to have us prepared."

For the kids that were available Wednesday, the Lightning were strong throughout the night versus the Eagles.

Picking up a win by fall late in the third period at 170 pounds was Jason Bynarowicz over Broomfield's Antonio Welch-Soto, who defeated Bynarowicz earlier this season.

"It was really nice to win this time," Bynarowicz said. "I needed to be better on my feet and always aggressive (with him). I've been caught being too conservative. I always need to be working."

Bynarowicz was able to score a reversal in the first and second periods but found himself trailing 6-4 going into the third. Starting from bottom position, he was unable to shake Welch-Soto early in the period. Finally, in the final 30 seconds, Bynarowicz rolled Welch-Soto over for his third reversal.

On top, he was able to secure the pin with seconds to spare for the win by fall.

"I felt (Antonio's) leg in, and I just thought of all the stuff I've been working on in practice and just did the things that I've been working on," Bynarowicz said.

The night for Legacy started with wins by fall from Dustin Cottew and Payton Sack to take the lead early. After being taken down to start his match at 132s, Kaeden Rasmussen got to neutral position quickly and scored two take-downs and back points late to get the 9-2 decision.

Joey Joiner got the Lightning back in the win column with his second-period pin at 145. The rest of the night included forfeits to Gavin Funk, Grady Funk, William Roberts and Sal Gutierrez, as well as Bynarowicz's win by fall and Aron Baugh getting a pin in the second period at 285s.

Another big crowd is expected with another local rival, the Horizon Hawks, coming to LHS on Thursday. For the team, it will be another chance to perform well and keep pushing for lofty goals set for this season.

"We have to keep pushing each other and getting work in to be self sufficient," Bynarowicz said. "Coach has been preaching to us all year about it. We need to start pushing it now."

Top stars shine for Broomfield

Key wrestlers for the Broomfield Eagles that came away with wins over Legacy include Darren Green, Presley Madril and Bryant Walker.

Madril earned the first win for the Eagles at 120 pounds. His ability to score quick take-downs, coupled with back points late, got him a 12-4 major decision. Green got the first pin for the Eagles at 138s, getting an early take-down and staying on top for most of the first period before getting the win by fall with six seconds left in the round. Green's win by fall at 220s came right at the buzzer to end the first period, sneaking in just in time.

Broomfield also earned a forfeit at 195 with Zach Zerr for their final points on the night.
