LONGMONT — It seems like every year news comes out about how this could be the worst flu season ever.

If you ever truly need a gauge to measure how bad it really is, just take a look at a wrestling room in mid January or February.

Depleted is a mild understatement.

"There's something about it this year; it's just hanging around for weeks. And I have a couple guys out tonight," said Longmont coach Matt Engelking after his team took down crosstown rival Silver Creek in a shortened dual 45-27 that featured just five matches.

"They just can't get back in and every time they do try, they just get sick again. I don't know what it is, but it has definitely increased this year and it hit us pretty hard."

Both teams will have plenty of time to heal in time for next week's regional tournament at Northridge in Greeley.

On Thursday night, the Trojans won three of the five contested matches, and started the night off with a big win at 170 from Jess Rivera. He pinned the Raptors' Ricardo Soto 26 second into the third period.

Gabe Sedillo (113 pounds) and Leif Neusken (138) also won their matches.

"Proud that those guys went out there and represented," said Engelking, who gave some different guys some varsity experience on Thursday night. "They fought hard."

Silver Creek's two victories came from Tyler Young, who recorded six takedowns against Jordan Gallegos, before ultimately pinning him at 5:09.

And at 132, possibly the most entertaining match of the night — between Silver Creek's Keldan Stutzman and Longmont's Mike Barone — went to Stutzman 12-10 in an action packed match that featured a rare four two-point reversals.

"Those type of matches are definitely a lot tougher, but the victory is still the same, and it feels good to win those tough ones," said Stutzman, who had never faced Barone. "A big part of it is the scrambles. Those scrambles are where you get the points, and it is a big technical game. You've got to know when to shoot, because if you miss it, you're done."

Every other St. Vrain School — Mead, Frederick, Erie and Skyline — will all be at Northridge for the Region 3 tournament. The lone exception will be Niwot. The Cougars will head to the South Region at Golden.
