Soren Sovndal has had little or no luck when it comes to regional tournaments.
The Boulder junior wrestler is hoping his luck turns around in 2017. During a 54-30 dual loss to Ralston Valley on Thursday night, Sovndal picked up another win at 132 pounds with a pin against Ralston Valley's Kadin Adams.
With the way things have been going for him lately, Sovndal has reason to remain optimistic about what the final weeks of the season may hold.
"I started off really well and I hit a rough spot in the middle when I started losing but I've started doing better again," said Sovndal, whose record is now 16-7. "I really want to get top four at regionals this year. I was really sick for regionals last year and as a freshman, I just got creamed. But I was a pretty defensive wrestler last year and this year I want to be more offensive so I'm taking a lot more shots."
It was a shot that nearly cost Sovndal a victory on Thursday. He missed on shot in the first period that left him out of position. But he recovered to pin Adams in 1 minute, 55 seconds.
"I made a couple mistakes but in the end it turned out alright," Sovndal said. "I took a bad shot but, luckily, I got around."
In Thursday's dual, Sovndal's was one of only five contested matches. All five were pins but Sovdnal's was also the Panthers' only victory on the night that was not a forfeit.
"We've got a lot of freshmen and it seemed like this match all the little freshmen had to wrestle," Panthers head coach Gil Espinoza said. "They're learning. I think a lot of schools have good feeder programs and that's what we need to get here in Boulder. But my kids, they didn't quit, they wrestled with what they knew and they're a good team.
"They like each other and they're good winners when they win, so they're developing good character and them developing as young men is the most important thing."
The loss to Ralston Valley was the Panthers' final home dual of the season. They will travel to Standley Lake on Friday.
