LOUISVILLE — It was on the schedule as the Front Range League championships, but an impromptu Legacy vs. Broomfield dual broke-out.

With all apologies to Poudre, who finished runner-up in the team race and crowned four champions, it was fun to watch the two cross-town rivals go at it in four different weight classes in Saturday's finals at Monarch.

Third-ranked Legacy won the team crown and four titles overall, two of those at No. 10 Broomfield's expense.

Devan Cogil opened the championship round with a thorough performance against Eagles freshman Presley Madril. He was up 12-4 in the second period before eventually winning by pin at 3 minutes, 53 seconds.

Legacy, which sent eight to the finals and got an impressive showing from their senior leader Ryan Deakin at 138 pounds, also got victories from Matt Hebel at 182 pounds and Nolan Funk at 195's — with a victory over Broomfield's Zack Walker.

The win for Hebel comes on the heels of his first loss of the season last week at Top of the Rockies against Weld Central's Dalton Robertson.

His response was emphatic this week, capped off by a 4-2 decision of Loveland's Matthew Dunkelman in the finals.

"After last week I've learned to just be prepared to wrestle every match every time I step on the mat. Last week I wasn't prepared to wrestle a very unique kid," said Hebel, who will continue his wrestling career at St. Cloud State in Minnesota. "It's definitely better losing early in the season rather than tournament time. It's better to learn your lessons early."

Broomfield sent five to the finals and after 170-pound senior Connor Ventura won his third consecutive tournament title, the Eagles final two wrestlers put a cherry on top of tournament sundae.

Noah Dohm and Mason Watt each got the better of the Legacy foes.

Dohm, in his first season wrestling since middle school, won his first tournament of the season and beat Derek Coleman by major decision 11-2.

"The coaches really helped me realize how tough it was and then I started winning tough matches and matches against some really tough kids," Dohm said. "We have good coaches here and it shows. I've never wrestled before and these guys have turned me into a machine and that is a testament to them."

At heavyweight, Eagles sophomore Mason Watt has had a roller-coaster season that has seen him battle his weight, spend time in the hospital and all the while maintain his No. 2 spot in the 5A rankings.

He and Tui Fa'amausili have locked horns a number of times over the last few seasons and Watt took advantage of some tendencies to win by pin 30 seconds into the second period.

"I've been practicing a lot on my feet and getting better and it paid off," said Watt, who said he finally has his weight under control. "I figured out a new way to break him down with the leg riding and pounding on the head, eventually everyone has to wear out."

Monarch sent two to the finals and got a championship from freshman Zander Rens at 120 pounds.

Rens busted open a 2-2 first period draw with Legacy's Trent Blazon, getting a take-down at seven near fall point before eventually winning by pin at 3:38.

"I felt good, especially since I wrestled Trent a bunch in middle school tournaments and never beat him once," Rens said. "It was good to finally get one."

Monarch's Cole Polluconi couldn't get to Poudre's defending state champion Jacob Greenwood and lost a 4-1 decision at 138-pounds.
