DENVER -- Phil Downing took the mat for Saturday night's 145-pound state title match as one of the most decorated wrestlers in Broomfield High history.

He now stands alone.

In total control from start to finish, the Eagles junior won a 10-1 major decision over Discovery Canyon's Tyler Oberg to leave with his third state title. He is the first Eagle to ever win three crowns.

"It was pretty special," Downing said. "I felt like I dominated the match and I did what I needed to do."

Teammate Drew Romero (39-3) missed on a three-peat of his own after Windsor's Joel Salomon slipped a single leg hold and scored a takedown to upset Romero in the final seconds of the 113-pound final.

Downing, who won at 138 pounds last season and at 119 in 2011, said watching what happened to Romero made him change his entire game plan from aggression to caution.

"I felt like he was as prepared as he should have been. I didn't want that to happen to me so I just stayed calm and didn't warm up too hard," said Downing, whose pin officially clinched the Eagles the Class 4A team title. "I didn't go out there overlooking the kid even though I beat him earlier this year."

The only other multiple state title-holder for Broomfield is David Marone, who won back-to-back 215-pound state titles in 2006 and 2007. In all, the Eagles have won 23 individual state titles.

Eagles head coach Joe Pereira said the program's first goal is sending kids to wrestle in college, second individual state champions and, if they accomplish No. 2, they should accomplish their third goal of team titles. But more than anything else, they want to keep notching new accomplishments.

"That's one thing I said when I started three years ago as head coach, 'We just have to do new things every year,'" Pereira said. "We've never had a three-timer. That's big."

Downing is now the 90th wrestler to win three Colorado state titles. If he wins a fourth state title his senior season, he will become only the 17th wrestler in Colorado history to accomplish the feat.

Downing, who also won youth state titles in sixth, seventh and eighth grade, said he's not done yet.

"I'm not going to take any breaks, maybe a two-week break after this and get right back after it," Downing said. "I want to be more prepared next year so I can get a pin in the finals instead of just a major."
