STERLING -- Lyons High's William Hickman, Kanyon Raper and Jon Hickman will all be representing the Lions at next week's Class 2A State Tournament after each finished third in his respective weight class at the Class 2A Region 3 tournament on Saturday.

William Hickman, a freshman, pinned three of the four opponents he faced at Northeastern Junior College. The last, Wray's Michael Flroes, went down in just 45 seconds, earning Lyons' lightest competitor a third-place finish at 106.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for state.

Twin brother Jon Hickman finished with an identical record and placement while wrestling at 170. The heavier Hickman disposed of his opponents in similar fashion, securing his final two victories via pins. Jon also took out a Wray wrestler, senior Thomas Groves, in the third-place match to punch his ticket to state.

A third LHS freshman, Raper, rounded out the trio of state-bound grapplers. After falling to Ramon Tarin of Wray, who would go on to win the title, Raper earned back-to-back victories at 126 to secure the third-place finish. The frosh withstood a double-overtime contest against Akron's Tyler Hottinger, which the Lion won 5-4, to reach the third-place match. Raper followed up that performance with a 2-0 decision to complete his day.

Lyons' Kelten Tschanz and Cameron Grossnickle also placed at the regional, both finishing fifth.

HOLY FAMILY SENDS 5 TO STATE

EATON -- Despite competing in just seven of 14 weight classes, the Holy Family wrestling squad qualified five of its wrestlers for the state tournament at the Class 3A, Region 2 Tournament.

Sophomore twins Julian and Joseph Prieto led the way for the Tigers, with both dominating their weight classes as the top seeds. Julian pinned all three his opponents, the final of which came in 2 minutes, 49 seconds against Brush's Macky Sandoval to take first place at 120.

Joseph also breezed through his bracket, collecting three pins to match his brother. Wrestling at 126, he secured his first-place spot by taking care of Platte Valley's Ryan Waite in 1:55.

At 220 Daniel Jansen took third place despite dropping his first match of the regional to Fort Lupton's Jacob Ornelas in a 6-0 decision. But Jansen made the most of his second chance at Ornelas later in tournament, earning a 5-2 decision over his opponent in the third-place match to exact revenge and qualify for state.

Sophomore Vincent Casados and freshman Ben Lavoie both took advantage of early wins in the regional to secure their spots. Casados, who fell to 2-2 after dropping the third-place match, avoided a wrestle-back by virtue of having beaten Platte Valley's Andrew Jarmillo earlier in tournament and thus awarded the fourth and final spot at 113.

Lavoie finished fourth in similar fashion while wrestling at 195. After defeating Eaton's Trey Stephens in a 8-4 decision his first match of the regional, Lavoie was spared from having to battle the same opponent a second time in a wrestle-back for fourth place. The Tiger finished with a 2-2 record for the tournament.
