GREELEY -- It had been a spell since Skylar McWee had completed a whole tournament. The last time the Legacy senior made it all the way through the brackets was Jan. 19, when he won the Arvada Invite, to be exact.
But his time away from the mat did not show Saturday at Greeley West.
Legacy's 220-pound dynamo was in prime form for the Front Range League championships, winning one of his team's two titles. McWee manhandled Kyle Moncrief, pinning the Poudre wrestler in the second period after tossing the Impala around for the opening 2 minutes.
The finish was a relief for McWee given his run the week before. After gearing up for the Top of the Rockies Invitational, McWee had to withdraw. But missing a finish in the prestigious invitational only built his enthusiasm for Saturday.
"I love wrestling so much, I was champing at the bit to get back," he said.
Despite the dominating finish McWee was still concerned at the end of the day. He might have made all the right moves, but with the brackets in his weight class light he was worried if he got the work he needed for the impending postseason. Regionals and state were at the top of the senior's mind with his last crack at a state title at hand.
"It was a seven-man bracket today, so I started off with two byes, which I didn't like," he said. "I guess it's all going to come down to what I do in practice."
Connor Casady earned Legacy's other title, weathering a late surge to win a 4-3 decision in the 160-pound finals. The titles were two of five places the Lightning came away with at arguably one of Class 5A's toughest conference tournament.
The run earned the team the best finish of any local team -- fifth. The showing was heartening to coach Mike Thompson given the slim roster the coach brought into the testing brackets. The coach had four spots open due to injuries.
"For the most, part we wrestled well today," he said. "We had some kids back in the lineup who had been sitting and were ready to go."
Fairview had the next most productive team run of the local squads, collecting three top-four finishes. But all came the hard way -- ending with losses. Coach Jim Lefebvre still saw merit in the finishes.
"Anytime you get those podium moments at a tournament like this it paves the way for maybe a good finish at regional," Lefebvre said. "Our regional definitely will not be as tough as it was today."
Lefebvre's lone finalist was Cito Balsells, who got all he could handle from Riley McConnell and more. The Knights' 170-pounder fell in an 18-3 tech fall with the Fort Collins wrestler proving too elusive to counter.
"But it's still good to come out here and face some good guys," he said. "Even if you do win, I would rather have the experience than get a first place."
Ben Ferrera also had his hands full in the 113-pound championship, facing fourth-ranked Dylan West. But the Monarch sophomore was pleased with what he was able to accomplish despite ending up on the short end of a 5-1 decision.
"It was a close match until the end," he said. "Only getting turned once, its definitely something to build on."
Boulder's Martin Selby rounded out the local action at the championship, falling in the 138-pound finals. The sophomore got pinned in the second round against fourth-ranked Taylor Killion of Fossil Ridge.
Up to that match he had put together a solid day of wrestling. In Selby's bracket alone, there was not a single wrestler with fewer than 20 wins on the season.
"Making finals here gave me a lot of energy for regionals next week," he said. "I was definitely a little nervous seeing that there's going to be four ranked wrestlers at that meet."
