As Dan St. John was drilling Longmont High wrestlers on moves on the mat on Wednesday, LHS coach Adam Keiswetter admitted he was a little star-struck himself.
He was also happy for his charges to hear from one of the sport's greats.
St. John, a two-time NCAA champion for Arizona State in 1989 and 1990, conducted a clinic for the Trojans on Wednesday, telling his own story as well as offering instruction.
LHS athletic director Andrea Tribelhorn had met St. John over the holiday break and set up the day with the Trojans.
"He's been everywhere and done everything you can do in wrestling," said Keiswetter, who was wrestling in elementary school when St. John was winning his titles.
St. John, who went to high school in the wrestling hotbed of Ohio, owns the unique experience of never having won a state title but then going on to win two crowns in college -- a valuable story for young wrestlers still developing in the sport and trying to get to the next level.
"I think the biggest thing was inspiring our kids," Keiswetter said. "They met someone who's done what they want to do."
