FREDERICK -- What was perhaps most impressive about the Longmont wrestling team's performance on Saturday was not how the Trojans were able to reach the finals in half the weight classes, or even the way Longmont ran away with the team title.

The most impressive aspect of the Trojans' day was that they were able to accomplish those feats without their lineup at 100 percent.

Even with two regulars sidelined with injuries and senior Forrest Wetterstrom forced to leave early to head out on a football recruiting trip, Longmont nonetheless proved to be the top team at the Gary Daum Classic. The Trojans reached the finals in seven events, ultimately winning the team race with 204.5 points, finishing 54.5 points ahead of runner-up Platte Valley.

The team title marked Longmont's fourth since 2000 at the tournament formerly known as the Boulder Valley Invitational. It had been six years since the Trojans' previous title at the tournament, a stretch that included a couple of years where LHS bypassed the event.

"The crazy part is we're not even full strength with our lineup," Longmont coach Adam Keiswetter said. "Considering we weren't full strength and won this tournament, that's awesome. It's not about one or two guys. It takes a team effort, and everybody that we brought here today helped. The last couple tournament's we've gone to we've gotten third, we got a second. But they were smaller tournaments. To come away with first here feels pretty good."

Although Longmont won only one of its seven title bouts -- and that one occurred via an injury default, as junior Jaime Ramos Vega was awarded the first-place medal at 195 pounds -- that hardly put a damper on the Trojans' big day.

Longmont took home six runner-up medals, a group that included Lane Olsen (145 pounds), Drake Greeott (152), Fernando Ramos Vega (160), Connor Stengel (170), Dutch Warner (220) and Chris Palacios (285).

Warner and Palacios each suffered narrow defeats in their championship bouts, with Warner dropping a 2-0 decision to Golden's Noah Lennox and Palacios falling 3-2 against another Golden grappler, Dakota Gulley.

Greeott, who returned last week from a serious elbow injury he suffered in the first tournament of the season, was forced to accept an injury default after he aggravated the injury during his championship match against Golden's Devin Rothrock.

"We've been doing pretty good this year and it feels good to be on the top of this one," Greeott said. "I feel like our lineup is getting set and we're getting there."

Erie placed sixth in the 13-team field after receiving individual championships from Brandon Wetsch and Ladd Bunker. Wetsch claimed first at 132 pounds by pinning Platte Valley's Austin Walters at the 3 minute, 48 second mark. Bunker defeated Longmont's Fernando Ramos Vega 8-5 to take first at 160 pounds.

One of the most impressive individual performances of the tournament was turned in by Niwot sophomore Clay Robinson, who needed only 33 seconds to pin Nikko Jaramillo of Platte Valley in the 106-pound final.

"I've been in the finals of every single tournament this year except for one, so I came in very prepared," Robinson said. "This will definitely help me to get seeded higher at regionals and state."
