NEDERLAND — Awarded to the highest all-around scorer in four events, the title of Skimeister crowns Colorado's best prep skier over the course of the entire season.

Following the completion of the 2014 state ski championships, a familiar name was etched on the most valuable skier trophy beside two others exactly like it. For the third consecutive season, Nederland High School senior Bailey Kuechenmeister is Colorado's Skimeister.

"It's a really big accomplishment for me and I'm really proud of myself," Kuechenmeister said. "It's been really important to me to stay consistent and improve every year and it's been really nice to have the support of my teammates and my coaches."

On Friday at Eldora Mountain Resort, Kuechenmeister placed ninth in the girls slalom and 12th in the freestyle nordic race. The previous day, she placed 14th in the giant slalom. In Thursday's classic nordic race, Kuechenmeister finished expecting a disastrous result. The results, however, proved to be an all-state time of 19 minutes, 38 seconds that landed her in fourth place.

Kuechenmeister said winning Skimeisters as a sophomore and junior were a real struggle. But in her final season with the Panthers, she felt that she just had to believe in her ability and the award would be hers once again.

"Winning my third consecutive was big for me because this year I felt like I really stepped it up a notch and I felt like I was more confident in my goals," Kuechenmeister said. "This season, for me, it's been about not putting too much pressure on myself. I was just having fun with it all because it was my last state meet."

Kuechenmeister had to look all the way back to Vail Mountain's Parke Cogswell, who won in '96, '97 and '98, to find the state's last back-to-back-to-back Skimeister.

When it comes to producing the best all-around prep skiers in the state, the Nederland High School ski team is a regular Skimeister factory. Now four of the last five female Skimeisters have been Panthers and the program has produced six of the last nine dating back to 2006.

As a team Friday, the Panthers girls improved on a solid Day 1 and took third behind Summit and Aspen with 599 overall team points. It was the girls slalom course where the Panthers showed their program's true strength.

Led by senior Keile Kropf, who took second place in 1: 33.20, the Panthers won the event. With 168 combined points, they edged Summit by one.

"It was nice to have the race on the hill we're used to skiing on so I could attack it since its pretty much my last ski race ever," said Kropf, who posted an outstanding 45.42-second first run. "I just thought I'd go for it and have fun."

Also in the slalom, Nederland's Sophie Defries took fourth place with a time of 1:34.72, Kuechenmeister (1:37.40) was ninth, Raina Galbiati (1:38.21) was 11th and Brita Luscher (1:38.31) finished 12th.

For the Panthers boys, who finished seventh as a team, junior Owen Foster stole the show by taking fourth in the slalom. For Foster, the all-state finish was a resounding personal victory after missing most of his sophomore season with a broken collarbone in 2012-13.

"I just wanted to get top five," Foster said. "It was great to have a healthy season and I felt like I kept my focus. It feels good to think I might be able to go for top three next year."
