ARVADA - The post-game tweet from the Monarch hockey team's Twitter account declaring that the Coyotes, "laid an egg," on the road Friday night said it all.

It just wasn't a good night for the Monarch hockey team, plain and simple. Nothing went right. The energy didn't feel up to par.

The opposite was true for Monarch's opponent, the Ralston Valley Mustangs, who dealt the No. 4-ranked Coyotes a brutal 6-1 defeat at Apex Center. Despite the disappointment of being handed their third loss of the season, the Coyotes will have to rebound quickly as they take on defending champion Regis Jesuit on Saturday night.

"We just didn't show up," Monarch head coach Jimmy Dexter said. "I think these guys were thinking about Regis and not Ralston and you can't do that in this league. Ralston just came out and played a great game. They took it to us and outplayed us big time tonight. We were outplayed and outworked.

"We've got to take our hats off to Ralston because they physically pounded us tonight."

On Friday, the Mustangs (4-4-0) jumped all over the visiting Coyotes with two goals in the first period and three more in the second. They led 6-0 before Monarch's Caleb Gold scored his team's lone goal in the final minutes of the third period.

The Coyotes (4-3-1) reached the state semifinals last winter and continue to have high expectations for themselves this season. Prior to Friday's loss, they had outscored their first seven opponents by a 21-13 margin.

"Overall, our season has been pretty good," Dexter said. "We've had some really good games. Our two losses are 1-0 to Valor, which they're super talented, and 3-2 to Cherry Creek. They're good, too, and I think we can play better than we did against Creek so I like our team. We have a lot of young guys but we have a lot of hard workers. We're just making some bad decisions out there that we've really got to clean up."
