FORT COLLINS — The Fairview girls swim and dive team's "sister act," as head coach Bob Smartt likes to call it, came through in a big way during the Class 5A state championships on Saturday.
At Edora Pool Ice Center on Saturday, two pairs of sisters - the Lessings and the Rezniceks - were among the top scorers who helped lead the Knights to a state runner-up finish for the second straight year since winning the title in 2015. The Knights' even scored more points than they did during that championship season and put up the third highest state meet total in school history.
But with this year's Fossil Ridge team scoring more points than any team in 5A state meet history while winning 10 of 12 events and setting a national record in the 200 medley relay, the Knights weren't too disappointed with second place at the historic event.
"They won more events than any team ever and this year's Fossil Ridge team will go down as the best in state history," Smartt said. "When you break the national medley relay record by over a second, that's very telling because that means you're strong in everything. Just being on the deck with them and taking second is an honor."
Fossil Ridge finished with a meet-record 424 points. The Knights scored 319, which was well ahead of third-place Regis Jesuit's 235.
Once of two Knights to claim bronze medals, junior Amelie Lessing placed third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 9.16 seconds. Also in that event, which was loaded with Knights, junior Morgan Simon overcame a knee injury to place fourth and Amelie Lessing's freshman sister, Karla Lessing, placed sixth.
"We always race each other all the time in the 500," Amelie Lessing said of having her younger sister with her in the championship heat at state. "I still think she's a little scared of me. I love racing her because it's always fun to race a sister and we both just went out there and did everything we could to help our team."
The Knights' other sister duo of Kaia Reznicek and Jenna Reznicek also combined for multiple individual and relay medals. Junior Riley Tapley earned All-American consideration in the backstroke and Mikayla Seigal finished top four in both the 200 freestyle and the butterfly.
"It was a coming out party for Jenna Reznicek, making top eight in the backstroke," Smartt said. "And her sister Kaia had very, very strong sprint freestyles for us and really swam fast on our relays. The families were great, and so was Riley Tapley. Mikayla Seigal also swam very well in the 200 free and the fly and also brought a lot of speed to our relays."
Sophomore Katey Lewicki was the highest placer for Monarch. She rebounded from a disqualification in the 200 medley relay to place fifth in the backstroke and 10th in the 200 individual medley.
"For state, for me, it was a lot more psychological," Lewicki said. "It wasn't my best day but it was definitely a good learning experience and finals were really fun. I really wanted to redeem myself after the DQ and swim well for my team."
Broomfield junior Jillian Martin placed 10th in the 100 freestyle and 13th in the 200 freestyle.
Junior Sophia Romero was the top individual placer for Legacy, taking 10th in the butterfly. Teammate Shannon Feran placed 14th in both the 200 freestyle and the butterfly.
Boulder placed 11th in the 200 freestyle relay and 12th in the 400 freestyle relay.
