LOVELAND — Broomfield's Madelaine McClain and Monarch's Courtney Roeber have learned a few things over the years about how they want the final few weeks of the swim season to play out.

As seniors who have a chance to do some fantastic things at the Class 5A state meet next week in Fort Collins, part of that plan was giving the Front Range League Championships this weekend an all-out, rest-will-come-next-week effort.

The penultimate meet of the season saw the pair further cement their possibilities in a multiple events at the Mountain View Aquatic Center, and the confidence for both seems to be at an all-time high.

"I know college (swimming) is going to be a lot different, so I'm excited to see what I can do for my high school team one last time," Roeber said after watching her team place sixth out of 13 teams. "I just started club after my sophomore year, so I've finally gotten the swing of training right and training hard I feel.

"I'm hoping this year will be completely different, with all my coaches kind of gearing me up a different way."

"I feel really good about state, and I feel like my club coach, my high school coach, my teammates, they've all helped me want to become a better swimmer," added McClain, the lone BoCo area swim event champion (500 freestyle). "There are days when I'm practicing three and a half to four hours and it is draining, but the more practice I get in, it's improved me and my capability."

With Roeber more a sprinter and McClain a distance specialist, the training styles between the two definitely differ. But all in all, there have been some changes in the way they have approached the final stretch of the season.

Roeber, who will swim for Wyoming, was looking for a little better finish in her 50 freestyle — she finished second at 24.74 seconds to Fossil Ridge's Coleen Gallilan (24.32) — but with consistent times around 24 1/2 seconds, the numbers in general are adding up.

"I didn't quite get what I wanted in this meet, but that was kind of expected because I'm not fully tapered," Roeber said. "I'll rest up and see what happens."

McClain's prelim time from Friday in the 200 freestyle was better than her Saturday finals finish, but her 500 freestyle time drop of nearly 1.8 seconds to 5:13.55 was encouraging.

Broomfield coach Emily Austin said she felt McClain has a chance to excel in the 500 at state, but McClain is still tossing around a few ideas based on where she feels she can help out the team the most.

"She's a senior and she knows where she is at with times, so now I think it's all icing on the cake from here on out," Austin said, her team placing seventh. "The 500 is a long racing physically and mentally, and you really have to want to do that one. I'm going to support whatever she feels like are going to be the best events for her."

"That 500, the two girls that were beside me pushed me because I wanted (first place)," McClain, a Colorado Mesa recruit, said. "I'm still figuring out where I'll fit at state. A lot to still think about."

Fossil Ridge won the meet with an impressive showing, while Fairview finished third with most of its top-tier swimmers missing the meet. The Knights' Julia Benz won the league diving title, however, scoring 436.40 points.

Fairview and Boulder both, in fact, were without their best athletes but both teams did get some new state cuts. Fairview is now to 33 individuals after seeing Sierra Szeto (100 backstroke) and Elysa Hofgard (100 breaststroke) achieve those standards.

Boulder senior Lindsay Coe, who was studying abroad last year, made her cut in the 100 backstroke in prelims.
