LONGMONT — After defeating their crosstown rivals at their place in the teams' first Northern League meeting on Jan. 16, the Longmont girls basketball players knew they would have to be on point when they hosted the rematch against Silver Creek on Thursday.

Coming into the game on a four-game losing streak, the Trojans also knew that playing inspired basketball would be the only way to halt the slide. So that's what they did, stifling the Raptors at the defensive end while senior Riley Bolte scored a game-high 19 points to pick up a 55-29 win.

"For once in the last five games, we really played like a team," Trojans senior Emma Carney said. "We had the confidence that we were going to win even though we lost the last four because we really wanted it."

The first time the Trojans (7-12, 5-7 Northern) and Raptors (4-16, 3-8 Northern) faced off this season, both teams' leading scorers in Trojans senior Riley Bolte (11.2 ppg) and Raptors senior Liz Salmeron (11.5 ppg) scored a combined 14 points. It was Bolte who came out hotter in the rematch, going 3 for 3 from 3-point range and scoring 11 points in the first quarter while the Trojans raced out to an early lead.

On defense, the Trojans held the visiting Raptors to four points in the first quarter and just two in the second to pull ahead 27-6 by halftime. Nine of the 12 Trojans who entered Thursday night's game recorded at least one point.

While it probably won't give them a significant boost, Thursday's win will also help the Trojans remain in the running to qualify for the 48-team 4A state tournament bracket. They were 43rd in the classification's RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) entering the game.

"I feel like we know just how important the next few games are," Trojans senior Sydney Fixmer said. "If we want to make the playoffs, we have to keep playing like we did tonight."

The Raptors have lost three of their last four games, with two of those games being decided by two or fewer points.

The Trojans will host Pueblo Central (7-12, 1-6 South Central) for a non-league game on Saturday. The Raptors will continue with conference play at Niwot (8-11, 4-6 Northern) on Saturday.
