FREDERICK — After winning just five games last year, the Frederick girls basketball players had a feeling they weren't going to get any respect from their opponents throughout the 2015-16 season.

The Warriors are now on a mission for R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

On Friday night, the visiting Mead Mavericks got a taste of the Warriors determination and the excitement the home gym has shown this season while rooting on its scrappy girls basketball team. In what was a close game throughout, the Warriors pulled away late to win 52-42 and notch their first Tri-Valley League victory of the season.

"We always feel like we're the underdogs in every single game," Warriors head coach Sean Boyer said. "The girls don't feel like they're respected by anyone. But our girls know it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks and we're going to play hard every game."

The Warriors (6-5, 1-1 Tri-Valley) trailed by one point to begin the fourth quarter on Friday night. In the final frame, they simultaneously turned up the defense and had a few shots fall in order to outscore the Mavericks (5-5, 0-1 Tri-Valley) 19-8 until the final buzzer.

Sophomore shooting guard Mylie Tarnowski led the Warriors with 14 points. Sophomore point guard Jamie Lee, the team's leading scorer at 12.7 points per game, scored 12.

"This was a super huge win," Boyer said. "It's a great confidence builder. We've really worked hard, starting even last summer when we played 60 games. We had a lot of foul trouble and a lot of young players step up. We have a 'next man up' mentality and that got us a big win tonight.

"Mead is a good team and a great program. They're a well-coached group and it was a great game tonight. Our crowd was amazing and helped us a ton tonight."

Bella Brown led the Mavericks with 14 points and Anna Veltien scored 11.

The Warriors will play next at home against Windsor (6-1) on Tuesday. The Mavericks will play at Roosevelt (4-2) on Saturday.
