THORNTON -- Mackenzie Dwyer has been on a heck of a pace the past couple of weeks. But her run of breaking and re-breaking team records came to an end Saturday.

The Skyline swimmer finally hit the wall in the 500 freestyle in the Class 4A state championship finals. The race was the first time in two weeks the sophomore failed to shave time off in the distance event.

Even so, Dwyer was not a bit disappointed. Quite the opposite, with her finish to the year having the swimmer believing she had proven plenty.

"I put up my best times ever, so I'm pretty pleased with what I've accomplished," said Dwyer, who finished eighth with a time of 5:21.99.

Dwyer had swum a time of 5:15.84 in Friday's preliminaries to break the school record she'd set one week earlier at the Tri-Valley League championships.

Part of what might have had Dwyer off pace in her marquee event Saturday was her packed schedule at the Veterans Aquatic Memorial Center. Earlier in the day she competed in the 200 freestyle, which had her drained when she took to the pool for her longer race. That, combined with the near state-record pace of the 500 had her muscles burning.

"It was a really fast heat," Dwyer said. "I may have gone out too fast, trying to keep up with them."

SILVER CREEK MAKES STRONG SHOWING

With Class 4A state swimming moving at or near record pace over the weekend, Silver Creek was edged from any championship-heat swims. But that did not mean the Raptors left the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center empty-handed.

The team came away with seven places in Saturday's consolation heats, boosting the Raptors to a 16th-place finish in the team competition. As impressive, Silver Creek improved its time in three events, shaving ticks off in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual relay and 100 freestyle.

The 200 medley relay (Diana Tobo, Madison Pelton, Morgan McKean, Kylie Rembert) produced one of the team's best finishes. Coming in with the heat's eighth fastest time from preliminaries, the Raptors pulled in third in the heat to finish 11th overall.

Rembert came up with the Raptors' other grand finale, finishing 11th in the 100 freestyle. The junior turned in a time of 54.76 to finish third in the consolation heat. The day before she was nearly three tenths of a second slow in the preliminaries.
