THORNTON -- Kate Peterson might not have finished Saturday as Broomfield's newest 500-yard freestyle champion. But the freshman made a heck of case for being one of the most talented distance swimmers in the team's history.

Peterson was thwarted from a Class 4A state championship in the event only by the near-record pace of Lauren Abruzzo. The Kent Denver senior and Northwestern University recruit was a tick off the 4A state record, swimming at a blistering pace start to finish. The Broomfield swimmer was just behind her in second.

But in maintaining the rapid clip at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center, Peterson broke one of her team's longest standing school records, one that was etched into team history long before the Eagles' young talent ever took to the pool.

"The record was older than she was," Broomfield coach Emily Austin said. "Erin McIntyre set it in 1998, the same year that Kate Peterson was born."

Knocking down the school record is no small potatoes, given Broomfield's history in the 500 freestyle. The swimmer who set the record went on to become an All-American at Rutgers University. Broomfield produced one other state champion in the event, with Kia Dobie winning the 4A title in 2006.

Peterson's 5:03.26 was 2 seconds faster than the old school mark. Coming into the event, the freshman had little idea she was set to swim at such an impressive pace.

"I just tried to go out fast and hold it," she said. "I was just trying to feel good in the race."

Peterson helped the Eagles to an unexpected top finish as a team at the state meet. The Eagles pulled in fourth, collecting six places in the championship heats and five in the consolations.

The Eagles were not counted out by any means, but were flying under the radar after a couple key graduations from the previous season. That might have been a blessing in disguise, with the team's loaded rosters the past years leading to a ton of hype about a state-title run.

"We were feeling absolutely zero pressure this year," Austin said. "We felt coming in if we could get top-10 it would be awesome. So to get top four is insane."

The team's score was hardly the only place where the Eagles surprised the state meet. It also did so on the diving board.

Melanie Stelling shocked the diving field, coming in fourth. What made her finish such a coup was her inexperience in the event. This was the junior's first year ever competing in diving. But with a long resume in gymnastics, she took to board like a fish to water.

"It's really exciting, I never expected this," Stelling said. "I didn't set a goal for myself coming into the event. I just came out trying to do my best and see how things turned out."

Stelling was part of Broomfield's 2012 state championship gymnastics team. But she was the first to admit, this state meet had a much different feel to the one she competed in just a few months ago.

"I wasn't as nervous as with gymnastics," she said. "I kind of took it as this was just a fun thing for me. I was just hoping to do my best."

Broomfield collected four other championship-flight places Saturday. Peterson also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle. Her older sister, Elizabeth, came up with with fifth place in the 100 butterfly. The Eagles' 200 freestyle relay (Elizabeth Peterson, Jennifer Young, Kendall Wingfield, Abi Young) finished seventh. And the 400 freestyle relay (Kate Peterson, Elizabeth Peterson, Alaina Gossett, Young) finished sixth after setting a new school record in the preliminaries.

"And we only graduate two seniors who scored today," Austin said. "So, who knows what the future holds?"
