THORNTON -- There is a certain comfort level with the expected contributions the Fairview girls swim team will receive from seniors Lacey Smith and Abbie Houck once the state meet rolls around.

Both are Division-I recruits. Both will be among the favorites in their respective individual races at state.

Yet coach Bob Smartt has expressed enthusiasm over the potential of the Knights' freshman class, and on Saturday Fairview displayed the sort of prevailing depth that will help the squad shine at state if the Knights continue to receive such all-around production. For the second year in a row Fairview won the annual Colorado Coaches Invitational, pulling away late from runner-up Fossil Ridge after taking first-place in both freestyle relay events.

"This was a wonderful first meet for Adee (Weller) and also for Sandra Freeman," said Smartt, referring to a pair of Fairview's talented freshmen. "This was their first high school meet and they came through big-time. They had personal-bests and have great enthusiasm. We're really blessed with this strong freshman class."

While the Knights' freshmen and sophomores provided the depth, Houck and Smith remained the catalysts for Fairview's winning effort.

Houck placed first in the 200 freestyle, taking 1.01 seconds off her preliminary time with a winning mark of 1 minute, 51.98 seconds. Houck struggled through her signature event, finishing sixth in the 500 freestyle, but the Louisville recruit recovered in time to anchor the Knights' winning race in the 200 freestyle relay.

Smith, who has signed with Northwestern, took third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle. Smith also contributed the third leg of the Knights' win in the 200 freestyle relay.

Yet it was the younger Knights who allowed the club to pull away from Fossil Ridge, Regis Jesuit, and Thompson Valley in the team standings. Weller reached the final heat in two events, placing seventh in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 500 freestyle. Freeman finished ninth in two events, the individual medley and the 100 backstroke.

Fairview also finished second in the medley relay.

"I would like to think I did good. I made a lot of best times," Weller said. "I think everyone participated well. I think the freshman class in general is really going to be good."

Niwot and Monarch also enjoyed solid meets behind each team's respective standouts.

Niwot finished second among Class 4A schools and 11th overall, getting a stellar individual performance from junior Hannah Driscoll. Driscoll reached the championship heat in two events, placing third in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle. Driscoll also helped Niwot to a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.

"It was a great meet to start the season with," Driscoll said. "I love swimming against the 4A and 5A schools at this meet. It's a really great experience. We were really excited about that (200 free relay). Our relays are going to do really well this year."

Monarch reached the consolation final in two relay events, placing 13th in the medley relay and 12th in the 200 freestyle relay. Senior Amanda Sanders led the way for the Coyotes, capturing the championship in the 100 breaststroke and also adding a 12th-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

"You're racing everyone from the state because you have 4A and 5A together, so it's nice to see who is out there," Sanders said. "It's definitely a confidence booster."

Monarch also saw divers Grace Newell and Savannah Magness take eighth and 11th, respectively.
