LONGMONT -- Elizabeth Peterson enjoyed a freshman season with the Broomfield girls swim team last year that will be difficult to top by the time she graduates.

Yet if the early reviews are any indication of what is in store for the 2012-13 version of the Eagles, Peterson and the rest of Broomfield's squad should once again evolve into one of the top clubs in Class 4A.

The Eagles made a strong early statement on Thursday, dominating Northern League rival Silver Creek with wins in 11 of 12 events to post a 120-65 dual-meet victory.

"The good kids are doing what they need to do, and the middle is stepping up and doing the job," Broomfield coach Emily Austin said. "We have a lot of newbies. Like, new to swimming newbies. So that's what we're going to build on. When these guys get amped up and we have everyone with us, I'm excited to see what they can do."

Peterson was part of a medley relay team that set the Class 4A record at the state meet last year, and she also turned in a pair of top-eight individual finishes in the butterfly and the backstroke. Although Broomfield graduated two seniors, Heather Shaver and Katalena Laufasa-Duncan, who combined to provide 59 points for the Eagles in individual events at state, Peterson and a number of her teammates appear more than ready to fill the void.

Seniors Alaina Gossett and Abi Young each won a pair of events for the Eagles against Silver Creek. Gossett took first in the distance freestyle events, while Young recorded victories in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. The Eagles also received victories from Peterson (butterfly), senior Anissa Mata (backstroke), Kendall Wingfield (50 freestyle), and Melanie Stelling (diving).

"I learned a lot from Heather and Kat on how to race, how to train," Peterson said. "They were a huge influence on me and I'm glad I got to race with them, even for just a year. It was fun, and it boosted my confidence a lot."

Broomfield also swept all three relay races Thursday.

"I think we'll be good and I think we'll have more state qualifiers than last year. We've got a lot of new people doing good and making cuts. I think we'll be able to do really good."

Wingfield, another member of last year's record-setting medley relay team, helped the Eagles open Thursday's meet with a victory in that event and also swam the opening leg of Broomfield's victorious race in the 200 freestyle relay.

Broomfield dominated despite swimming without Peterson's younger sister, freshman Kate Peterson, who is competing this week at the junior nationals.

"We're rearranging our relay teams to see what works best," Mata said. "I guess we kind of have good relays now, but we're kind of mixing it around. I guess so far it's been going good, so I'm excited to see how we get it together."

Junior Kylie Rembert earned Silver Creek's lone victory, outpacing her club teammate Wingfield to take first in the 100 freestyle. Rembert also turned in a state qualifying time while finishing second in the 200 freestyle. Silver Creek also posted a state qualifying time in the 400 freestyle relay.
