BOULDER -- Boulder High sophomore swimmer Haley Rowley wasn't real happy with her times on Friday night at the Fairview Invitational.

Then again, Friday's meet served merely as a tuneup for Rowley for next week's junior nationals meet in Tennessee. Plus she'll always be happy with logging a few victories for her team.

Rowley won both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke in addition to leading off the Panthers' winning 400 medley relay. Rowley's times in her individual events 1 minute, 1.17 seconds and 1:01.11, respectively, were both nearly five seconds slower than what she's turned in previously.

"Just to have a good time and focus on pacing myself," Rowley said of her strategy heading into Friday's meet. "It's fun. I really liked being part of the team."

Rowley was a rarity Friday in that most of the top swimmers were absent from the meet, competing instead at a state club meet at the University of Denver. Rowley is headed there Saturday to compete.

But with most of the club swimmers out of the mix, that left room for several other area swimmers to take the spotlight for a night at a unique meet featuring seven relays and only five individual events.

For the Fairview Knights, that meant showing off their depth. Despite missing about 15 club swimmers, FHS rolled to the team title Friday with 424 points. Rampart took second at 289. Monarch took third at 276. Boulder was sixth at 168.

Fairview took three relays and one individual event, with sophomore Sienna Stonesmith leading the way.

Stonesmith won the 50 freestyle in 26.34 seconds and took second to Rowley in the 100 fly in a state-qualifying time of 1:03.65. She also anchored the Knights' victory in the 200 medley relay.

Janaye Monica -- a star as a freshman for Fairview who is back with the Knights as a senior after swimming club exclusively the last two years -- also turned in a strong night for FHS. She placed second in the 100 breaststroke and helped the Knights to wins in the 200 medley and 200 breaststroke relays.

"It's great to have her back," FHS coach Bob Smartt said. "We've got a strong breaststroke core, and she's showing a lot of leadership for those girls."

Smartt said the early-season meet is good for evaluating a lot of swimmers.

"I've got a list of about 200 things (to email out to individual swimmers regarding ways to improve their technique)," Smartt said. "We were able to get about 65 girls in the water and had some very fine first-week-of-the-season swims."

Monarch's top performance of the night came in the 200 freestyle relay where the Coyotes quartet of Claire Green, Mandy Ennis, Marissa Luleski and Elise Kinney took second to Rampart.

"We're pretty pleased with today," Monarch coach Ted Romero said. "We really worked them hard this week."
