BOULDER -- Fairview girls basketball has already had a successful early-season campaign. But Tuesday night, Sarah Kaufman pointed out the team was aiming for more.

The junior won't deny that the main goal for the Knights' run through the Fairview Festival is to continue to improve. But the team also believes it can thrive. If everything works out, the guard believes her team can make a run all the way to the championship.

And in the opening round of the tournament, the Knights made a strong case they have the personnel to do it. With an explosive start to the game, Fairview blew past Arvada West for a 57-41 win.

"This was our fifth game of the season and we had a lot of energy out on the court," said Kaufman, who led her team's offense with 17 points. "It was good start."

Beating Arvada West (1-4), the Knights (4-1) now face Denver East (4-1) at 8 p.m. Thursday in the second round of the tournament. And with what new Fairview coach Andre Goldberg has already seen, he believes his team is setting up for a strong run. Goldberg believes his players are getting comfortable with each other and are coming together. But he also understands the Knights still have their work cut out for them.

"(East) is a very good basketball team, they got some posts and guards that can do some things," Goldberg said. "We've got to be ready defensively."

If Fairview can survive the gauntlet, the coach believes the team will have proven plenty.

"I think its one of the best tournaments around," Goldberg said. "We excited about the challenges it bring and I think we'll be stronger down the line for it."
