LAFAYETTE — There are plenty of similarities between the Centaurus and Niwot boys basketball teams. Both have a first-year coach, both have a large contingent of seniors, and both unfortunately are playing for pride at this point in the season.

Pride can create some intense games, too, and Wednesday's contest between the Cougars and Warriors certainly fit that billing. And with a last gasp effort on their home floor that included clutch free-throw shooting and defense, Centaurus earned a split of the season series with a 50-45 victory.

Logan Platt's 12 points and Eric Gambon's 10 led a balanced attack that included three others with at least seven points, and the Warriors improved to 8-14 with one game remaining.

"We've had a pretty rough season and really right now it's just about working hard for a win or two as seniors," Platt said after the game. "We didn't panic, kept our composure and when (Niwot) got on a run, we put a stop to it at the right time."

It wasn't a particularly great shooting night for either team, but Niwot was cold at the start and couldn't fully get its perimeter attack going (4-for-18 from 3-point range for the game). It led to lengthy scoring streaks for each side throughout the game, including an 11-0 run for Centaurus to end the first half and a 14-3 run for Niwot into the third quarter that tied the contest at 27-27 with 3 minutes, 13 seconds left in the frame.

Centaurus never trailed after that point, despite Ryan Kannegieter's nine fourth-quarter points. All those points came within the first 3:32 of the stanza, getting NHS to within 41-40.

Niwot got looks down the stretch but just couldn't get the shots to fall, dropping it to 8-14 and 4-9 in league.

"It's always fun to play Niwot at the end of the season, and you just go out there and play your hardest," Platt said. "It's a transition year for the program, but we're trying to start changing the culture right now."
