LONGMONT — The Niwot girls track and field team is a hungry group and it has shown all season long.

The Cougars' determination was on display yet again when they ran away with the Northern League title at Everly-Montgomery Field on Saturday. The Cougars won nine of the 19 events and scored 63.5 more points than second-place Longmont.

Even having won a number of meets and a conference title, the Cougars' hunger has not been satisfied. After winning three straight Class 4A state titles from 2013-2015 and finishing third last year, they're most hungry for a return to the top.

"We have great leadership and unity on our team and this year we understand more what it takes to be a championship team," Cougars senior Alexis Carroll said. "I think we lost sight of that a little bit last year but this year we really have out sights set on winning and we know how to do it."

At the two-day Northern/Tri-Valley/Mile High League Meet, Carroll won the 100 hurdles (14.79 seconds), the long jump (18 feet, 8.5 inches) and the triple jump (35-10.5). She also led off the Cougars' 800 relay that won the league title in 1:45.01.

The Cougars also won the 1,600 relay in 4:09.99. Makenzie Fidelak won the 300 hurdles in 44.38 seconds. Mary Gillett took first in the 100 (12.42), the 200 (25.24) and the 400 (56.12).

"Right now, I think our girls are coming around and getting the pieces together," Niwot head coach Maurice Henriques said. "I think we'll definitely be in the conversation at the end. Our coaches did a great job of hitting the hallways at the school and getting more kids out. That was probably our biggest difference this offseason."

In the Tri-Valley, Roosevelt dominated the girls team scoring. Mead was second by 74.5 points and Holy Family was third, 27 points behind Mead. Mavericks sophomore Abby Glynn led the way for her team, winning the 200 (26.04), the 300 hurdles (45.88) and the triple jump (34-0.75). She also ran on the Mavericks sprint medley relay team that won with a time of 1:49.64.

In the Mile High League, Highland won the team title and Lyons was second on 28.5 points behind. Ixchel Leeuwenburg threw a 114-6 to win the discus and Brenna Kuskie cleared 10-7 to win the pole vault. While those were the only individual events the Lyons won, they dominated the relays, winning the 400 relay (52.62), the 800 relay (1:53.21), the 1,600 relay (4:19.09) and the 3,200 relay (10:28.28).
