BROOMFIELD — There is a lot of truth to that saying that you get out what you put in.

For Centaurus sophomore hurdler Charley Sagrillo and Monarch senior sprinter Danielle Honan, the time put into their specific disciplines during the cold Colorado winter months proved valuable on Saturday afternoon in the first meet of the season.

Sagrillo won the 110 meter hurdles at the Boulder Snow Invitational at Broomfield's Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium and placed second in the 300 hurdles; and Honan captured the 100 on a brisk afternoon.

"That was good, but I know my starts need to get a little better," said Sagrillo, who was still successful despite the nagging affects of a cold weighing him down. "I've been working all winter and I think that definitely helped, so I'm hoping for big things."

Sagrillo was really fast in the 110's, and was the only runner to break 16 seconds by going 15.87 . It's a mark, that not only qualifies him for state, but would have been right in the mix last year for a berth on the podium.

It's a time coming this early in the season that has Warriors coach Jesse Fassler — who spent a lot of time working on the speed and strength aspect of Sagrillo's approach — thrilled about.

"His height and ability in the hurdles is really coming together now. He's so tall and it really works for him with the hurdles," Fassler said. "And at the beginning of the season coach Cody Walega — our hurdles coach — has really worked with him in his blocks and just getting over the hurdles with form."

In the 300 hurdles, Sagrillo bided his time until he hit the turn and nearly caught Fairview's Jackson Carter (winner in 44.00 seconds) at the line, but just missed, finishing in 44.21. It's a race he feels that will come around as the season gets going.

"It is a race that will get better for me," he said. "I just know I have to put in a little more time on the 400 and 300's though."

For Honan, who has aspirations of competing at the next level, her level of commitment to getting better in the off-season was on display against a loaded field in the girls 100 meters.

She didn't get off to a quick start, but rallied and leaned at the line to beat Boulder's Jaime Hegg by .06 second, winning in 13.03.

"The weather was a little cold, but we have been training pretty hard, so it was a great start to the season," said Honan, who was a part of the Coyotes winning 800 relay team. "I got a lot more serious about track and it has become a bigger thing for me and I am thinking about running in college.

"Today I had a rough start, but I think in general, my starts have improved."

The race that was worth the price of admission on Saturday afternoon was the boys 800 meters. And recent University of Washington-commit Isaac Green of Monarch didn't disappoint.

The decorated Coyotes harrier picked off Denver South's front-running Yanique Borne with 200 meters to go and cruised to a personal best 1:54.38 victory.

"I only ran a 1:55 last year, so this is already a better season," said Green, who has visions of taking down the state record in the event (1:50.59) set by Smoky Hill's Blake Yount in 2015. "I want to break the state record. I went on to MileSplit and I don't think any of the guys can touch it, and I'm hoping we can change that."

In the same event on the girls side, Broomfield's Madison Mooney beat an impressive field that included Peak to Peak's talented duo of Quinn McConnell (the mile winner in 5:01.35) and Tiana Bradfield. Mooney's fleet 2:13.21 run would have been good enough for fifth in last years 5A state meet.
