As much as the first day of the Front Range League Championships in track and field acted more as a dress rehearsal, with a mixture of preliminary rounds and some finals, the Broomfield Eagles gave a preview of what could be on the horizon.

The host school, one of the favorites for the boys league crown along with Fort Collins, may just have the recipe for a run at the Class 5A state meet in two weeks. With sprinter Jordan Xiong in fine form in prelims while earning the No. 1 seeds in both the 100 (10.95) and 200-meter dashes (22.15), distance stalwart Jake Mitchem back in the fold and earning third place in the 3,200 (9:44), and Garrett Betty finishing as the runner-up in the discus (151-11), the Eagles had plenty of top-end individual performances on their home track.

Broomfield positioned themselves well in preparation for a run at the FRL team championship and, if the boys in blue and white perform in the hurdles finals as they did in prelims, the Eagles could really soar. Johnathan Penrose (39.14), Dalton Ill (39.38) and Mitchell Gorman (39.75) swept the top-three places in the 300 hurdles, while Penrose was second in the 110 hurdles. To have three competitors on one team dip under 40 seconds is a rarity.

"I think we're finally putting together a state championship team," Broomfield cross country and distance track coach Greg Weich said. "Having Jake back is a big deal. We're looking like we'll be tough in the next couple weeks.

"The hurdlers are the anchor of our team for sure. Johnny Penrose and Dalton Ill are also the heart of our team. They are the nucleus."

As for other standouts from Boulder County on day one, Alex Weseman of Fairview was the runner-up in prelims of the 400, Logan Burgess of Monarch finished third in the long jump, Ivy Gonzales of Broomfield was third in the 3,200, and Heather Betz of Fairview was third in the high jump. Broomfield's Brenna Fankell also placed third in the shot put, while Legacy's Anthony Lyle was second in prelims of the 100 and 200.

The boys 3,200 relay from Boulder—Eli Fournier, Isaac Fournier, Gage Hornung, and Sam Primozich— battled Fort Collins before running a 5A best time of 7:59.98 to hold off the Lambkins (8:02.01).

The boys pole vault was also held on Wednesday, but results for that event, along with early team results, were unavailable as of press time.
