BROOMFIELD — The boys high jump event at Friday's Broomfield 9-Team Invitational track and field meet featured a group of jumpers who appear to be poised to break out in a big way this season.

In an event dominated by rivals Broomfield and Longmont, the dueling programs combined to claim four of the top five places in the high jump. Eventually, Broomfield senior Bryce Williams prevailed by clearing the bar at 6 feet, 1 inch.

But Longmont freshman Cruz Garcia, who is currently Colorado's top ninth-grader in the high jump and long jump, was hot on Williams' heals at 5-11.

"I'm glad I was able to clear that height but at my last meet, I cleared 6-4 so I was kind of hoping to do a little better," Williams said. "At the end I almost cleared 6-5, so I was really happy with that. The last jump was my best one and I nearly cleared it. I just barely hit it with my butt so I'm confident that I can get it."

Williams' personal-best mark of 6-4 would have earned him a medal in the Class 5A high jump at last year's state championship meet. Garcia's personal-best mark of 6-0, which is the top mark for a freshman regardless of classification, would have earned him a medal in the 4A state championship high jump last year. Garcia's personal-best of 20-4 in the long jump also leads Colorado freshmen.

In good shape already despite a weather-limited March, both Williams and Garcia are planning significant improvements to their heights. Broomfield head coach Justin Hazzard said Williams should reach at least 6-6 in the high jump and Garcia expects to increase his best mark by three or four inches. If Friday's performances were any indication, Williams and Garcia are probably right to bet on themselves.

"I think it went pretty well today but the kid from Broomfield is a good jumper," Garcia said. "There were a bunch of great competitors in the high jump today but they were all super nice to each other and encouraged each other. It was a good group of guys. By the end of the year, I want to get six-four in the high jump and maybe 21 in the long jump."

Also in the Broomfield 9-Team Invitational high jump, Broomfield senior Grant Croell cleared 5-9 to place third and Longmont's Tyler Oliver also cleared 5-9 and placed fifth.

"At the beginning of the season, it looked like we weren't going to have many good jumpers because all the seniors graduated last year," said Williams, who also won the triple jump. "Especially in the horizontal jumps, it wasn't looking great. But we've had a lot of underclassmen come in and everyone has stepped up so we're looking good."
