The Broomfield girls soccer team, the No. 2 seed in the Class 5A playoffs, used a strong second half to defeat a scrappy 15th-seeded Fossil Ridge 2-0 Friday night and advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season since moving up to 5A in 2015.
The Eagles avenged their only non-win of the season, a 3-3 draw with Fossil Ridge on April 10.
"I thought we were absolutely dominant in the second half," said Eagles head coach Jim Davidson. "We had wave after wave of pressure and attacking opportunities, and we scored two good goals. The previous meeting was the game that really woke us up to the fact that we needed to play a lot less selfishly. So that was good, to get a little bit of redemption."
After a scoreless first half that only saw a few chances for either side, Broomfield made some halftime adjustments and came out on the front foot in the second half.
The Eagles broke the tie in the 60th minute. Shaylee Gailus broke free down the right side and sent a cross on the ground toward Gia Lemley at the top of the box, who guided her first-time finish into the top left corner.
Mallory Mooney iced the game for Broomfield in the 77th minute, as she finished a through ball from Lindsay Hudson past the onrushing Sabercats keeper.
"I just got a good ball from Lindsay and I saw that the goalie was coming out, so I just kicked it on the ground," Mooney said.
Defensively, the Eagles were able to hold Fossil Ridge to just two shots on goal. The Sabercats' best chance came early in the game, as Ashley Soulier hit the crossbar with a shot from the left side in the 5th minute, but Broomfield was able to clear it away. Fossil Ridge had another chance on a free kick late in the second half, but the long-range shot was an easy save for Grace Fuller.
Broomfield will host 7th-seeded Columbine in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. A time has not yet been announced.
"We need to understand that each game gets progressively more difficult and we're going to be under pressure in each of those games. It's just going to be our mentality and making sure we're good in the first 15 minutes of the game," Davidson said.
