AURORA -Broomfield's slow start was enough to cost the Eagles girls' soccer team a chance to play for the state championship.

Danielle Babb scored less than three minutes into the game and added an insurance goal in the second half as the Arapahoe Warriors ended Broomfield's title run with a 2-0 win in the 5A semifinals at Legacy Stadium on Saturday.

The No. 8-seeded Eagles (15-3-1) had their season stopped short of a state title after being ranked No. 1 earlier in the year.

"We wanted more," Broomfield junior Hailey Stodden said. "We definitely did not want to lose today."

The Eagles were in the state semifinals for the second straight season despite losing a strong group to graduation last year. The 2017 version was youthful but still managed to get back to the Final Four.

"We've had an incredible season," coach Jim Davidson said. "To graduate what we graduated last year, for these players to get back to the same level speaks well of them. I'm very proud of them."

The Eagles overcame injuries during the year but were hit hard again Saturday. Senior midfielder Anna Bybee and sophomore defender Isabelle Munsell left the game with injuries.

Arapahoe stunned Broomfield when Babb outraced the Eagles defense on a lob, put a move on goalkeeper Grace Fuller and scored to put the Warriors up in the third minute.

"The first goal was a little soul-crushing," Davidson said. "Tactically we were prepared for that play and we made a host of mistakes on the play and got exposed."

Broomfield started to put pressure on Arapahoe toward the end of the first half. Jessie Mooney had a great chance on a free kick in the 37th minute and Stodden had a great cross deflected by Warriors goalkeeper Grace Caddorette in the 38th minute.

The Eagles kept it up in the second half. Stodden forced Caddorette to make a great save in the 41st minute and soon after Marina Davidson nearly headed Mooney's corner past Caddorette on the short side.

Despite dominating the early part of the second half, it was Arapahoe that got the only goal of in the 54th minute.

The Eagles kept pushing for a goal, and Stodden nearly got it in the 73rd minute but Caddorette made a diving save of her low shot.

"That goalkeeper had an amazing game," Stodden said. "I felt if we got one we were going to be OK but we weren't able to open it up."
