It's a new playoff bracket but the same old story with two area teams from the Front Range League set for a big-time showdown late in the Class 5A state tournament.

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the No. 8 Broomfield Eagles will host the No. 16 Fairview Knights in the state quarterfinals. While Broomfield may have beaten Fairview 2-0 during the regular season, each team will as always have to be on its game to get past the other.

"Obviously, we're coming off a pretty emotional win over Cherry Creek," Fairview head coach Jeff Frykholm said. "The question for us is whether or not we can get back to the level that it took to beat Cherry Creek. Broomfield is here every year because they are talented and well coached and well prepared. We know it will take our best game to compete with them.

"However, I don't think we played our best soccer against them during the regular season and I think our girls will agree. We had a lot of respect for Broomfield and we're excited for a chance to put a better product on the field."

Both the Eagles (14-2-1) and Knights (13-4) are coming off riveting second-round victories that ended in shootouts. Broomfield took down No. 9 Columbine and Fairview knocked off No. 1 Cherry Creek.

Yet another Front Range League team, has a chance to reach the semifinals with one more victory. Also in the state quarterfinals, No. 11 Legacy (15-2) will take on No. 3 Mountain Vista (14-2-1) starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

"The stretch that we played during the Front Range League so well prepares our league's teams for the playoffs," Frykholm said. "Being tested by the likes of the Broomfields, Rocky Mountains, Legacys and all the others, those big-time playoff games aren't as daunting."

In 3A, No. 1 Jefferson Academy will look to continue its torrid pace through the state tournament. In the quarterfinals on Wednesday, the Jaguars (14-1-1) will host No. 9 SkyView Academy (12-4-1) at 5 p.m. In the opposite quarterfinal, No. 5 Peak to Peak (13-2-1) will face No. 4 Liberty Common (14-1) at Fossil Ridge High School with a chance to win and set up a regular season rematch with Jefferson Academy in the semifinals.

In 2A action on Wednesday, No. 2 Dawson School (12-3) will take on No. 3 Front Range Christian (10-6) at All-City Stadium.
