LAFAYETTE — It took the Dawson School girls soccer team a full half of play to get going, but the Mustangs eventually found their rhythm to kick off their 2016 state tournament run with a win on Friday.

Hosting No. 8-seed Resurrection Christian after a first-round bye, the top-seeded Mustangs broke open a scoreless stalemate with three unanswered goal in the final 28 minutes of a 3-1 victory in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

"We had the game in Vail and that was just a battle," Mustangs head coach John Siegrist said. "Coming off that big win with Vail (Mountain), which is a great team, I think we came onto the field in the first half a little lackadaisical, a little sluggish. They were a little down when they came off at halftime but they went back out there in the second half and looked much better, and that was great to see."

In their previous game on May 6, the Mustangs won 3-2 against Vail Mountain, the same team that defeated them 1-0 in last year's 2A state championship game.

On Friday, senior Sophie Brussell busted loose on a breakaway and scored to put the Mustangs (12-2-1) on the board in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later, senior Lindsey Gallop scored on a long ball from just across midfield that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the net.

In the 67th minute, Cameron Espstein's goal put the Mustangs up 3-0. The Cougars (6-9) scored on a free kick that was too high for Mustangs keeper Kate Gallop, who had six saves, with 33 seconds left in the game.

"Usually our attacking mids Hannah (Isenhart) and Sophie, they can put in long balls and they have been scoring from about 30, 35 out," Siegrist said. "Those were just a little bit off today so I told them at halftime to push it up a little bit more. They did that and we moved a couple girls around to fine tune some things and that's when the goals started coming."

The win was the third time the Mustangs defeated the Cougars this season. The Mustangs won 5-0 in the season opener and 7-2 on April 7.

The Mustangs will face fifth-seeded Evangelical Christian (9-7-1) in the semifinals at All-City Stadium on Wednesday. The game is schedule for a 7 p.m. start.
