FIRESTONE — On a windy Wednesday, the par-72 Saddleback Golf Course was unkind to the players who competed in the Skyline Team Invitational.
But Fairview junior Kelsey Webster, who tied for 42nd at last year's Class 5A state tournament and is off to a great start in 2017, handled the weather and the pitfalls of the course better than the rest.
Finishing with a 5-over 77 on Wednesday, Webster won the tournament handily. The next closest player, Estes Park's Megan Miller, was a full five strokes behind Webster.
"The wind definitely affected everything," Webster said. "It hurt me a couple times and caused me a couple bogeys but I was hitting the ball well. I could have made a few more putts but overall I think I did pretty well on a windy day. I've been working super hard on my game and it's just starting to pay off right now. I've gotten a big confidence boost and I'm excited to see how well I can do this season."
Webster had just one double-bogey on Wednesday and birdied the par-4 ninth, the par-5 13th and the par-4 15th. It was a welcome follow-up to the 69 that won her the title at the Chilly Chili last week and tied the tournament record.
Behind Webster's performance and a sixth-place finish from teammate Kate Jordan, who shot a 16-over 88, the Knights tied with Monarch for the top spot in the team scoring.
"It went pretty well," Knights head coach John Zerwin said. "Kelsey had a great day, Kate got sixth and Sophie was in the top 30 so they were all solid on a windy day. It was a long day and the conditions were tough. They did really well."
Monarch's Liina Neitenbach placed fourth with a 15-over 87, shooting par on six of the 18 holes at Saddleback. Teammate Gabrielle Ferro tied for seventh at 18-over.
Skyline's Grace Gunlikson, who placed 30th at the 4A state tournament last season, took fifth on Wednesday at 16-over.
Broomfield's Ana Cole led for a time but struggled on the back nine. She finished in a three-way tie with Legacy's Izzy Hebert and Boulder's Sydney Arthur for 11th place at 22-over.
