GOLFERS TO KNOW

Erin Baum, Jr., Frederick: After placing 71st at 4A state last season, she took it upon herself to put in a ton of extra work during the offseason with the goal of moving up in the ranking as a junior.

Carly Gallant, Sr., Monarch: She finished 26th at 5A state last season, and this year she's not only back to try to improve on that placement but is also ready for her turn to lead the Coyotes.

Ana Roh, Jr., Broomfield: Finishing last season in a tie for 44th place at the 5A state tournament was a significant breakthrough for a sophomore and the Eagles expect big things from Roh as a junior.

Kelsey Webster, Jr., Fairview: A tie for the 42nd position at the 5A state tournament was how she ended last season and that's a promising starting point for the junior to begin the 2017 campaign.

Grace Gunlikson, Sr., Skyline: Finishing her junior season in a tie for 30th place in Class 4A left her hungry for one more chance to crack to top 20 or do better.

Emma Teuton, Sr., Monarch: Her 2016 state tournament ended with her finishing in 40th place, which the Coyotes senior expects to top in her final prep season.

TEAM-BY-TEAM CAPSULES

BOULDER PANTHERS

Coach: Ryan Bishop (fifth season)

Last year: Finished ninth at 5A Southern regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Sydney Arthur (Jr.); Katie Bush (Jr.); Payton Williams (Sr.).

Outlook: Though they will be relatively young, the Panthers expect to have strong senior leadership this season. Seniors Payton Williams and Bijou Macdonald will look for strong finishes to their prep careers and the team's six freshmen will learn from them as they do.

BROOMFIELD EAGLES

Coach: Tony Ferraro (third season)

Last year: Finished 12th at 5A state tournament

Returning state qualifiers: Ana Roh (Jr., t44th).

Others to watch: Katie Bush (Jr.) Jessica Clark (Sr.); Ana Cole (So.); Lauren Hirsch (Jr.); Hannah Miller (Sr.).

Outlook: The Eagles are another team that will be younger this season than in years past. After qualifying a team for the state tournament last year, the Eagles won't let their youth stop them from working towards a repeat appearance in 2017 in the program's third year under Ferraro.

CENTAURUS WARRIORS

Coach: Tim DeBerry (first season)

Last year: Finished 17th at 4A Northern regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Jessica Huth (Jr.); Bri Nichols (Jr.); Katie Stroll (Jr.).

Outlook: Improvement is the number one goal for the Warriors this season. "We're just looking to move up in the league standings and maybe get a girl through regionals this year," DeBerry said. "I think our chances are pretty good and with our strength being in our junior class, we're in a good place to build for the future." With a number of juniors returning with significant experience, there's no reason to think the Warriors can't accomplish their goals.

ERIE TIGERS

Coach: Matthew Smith (third season)

Last year: Finished 13th at 4A Northern regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Sophie Arnold (Jr.); Shayla Hoople (Jr.); Madison Martinez (Fr.); Peyton Toledo (Sr.).

Outlook: The program is growing and the Tigers have more girls out for golf than they have in several years. Led by a group of girls who are on the cusp of qualifying for the state tournament, the Tigers are hopeful that they could have at least one player break through and qualify for state.

FAIRVIEW

Coach: John Zerwin (sixth season)

Last year: Finished 15th at 5A state tournament

Returning state qualifiers: Sophie Nelsen (So., t80th); Kelsey Webster (Jr., t42nd).

Others to watch: Kate Jordan (So.).

Outlook: The Knights played their way to fielding a team for the state tournament last season and return two state qualifiers. Of their chances to fill the holes left by graduation, Zerwin had this to say: "I'm pretty excited. It's kind of a turnover year for us and we have a lot of new kids on the team but it will be really interesting to see how they come together."

FREDERICK WARRIORS

Coach: Bill Kipp (1st year)

Last year: Finished 10th at 4A Northern regional

Returning state qualifiers: Erin Baum (Jr., 71st).

Others to watch: Jenna Frenzel (So.); Cassandra Palmer (So.); Payton Wallace (So.).

Outlook: Kipp joins the Warriors after coaching Centaurus last season and inherits a player with state experience in Baum. Serving as the manager for the boys team so that she could get extra practice in the fall, Baum is determined to move up in the statewide rankings as a junior. Currently battling low participation numbers, Kipp is focused on nurturing the momentum the Warriors built after last year's successful season.

JEFFERSON ACADEMY JAGUARS

Coach: Kyle Tycksen (first season)

Last year: Finished 12th at 4A Metro-West regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Maya Gordon (Sr.); Emily Grantham (Jr.); Ellie Hausmann (So.).

Outlook: The Jaguars are returning four girls who obtained important experience at the regional tournament last season. That will help them as they work to bring a number of younger players up to speed. They will have a new face at head coach as well, with Tycksen taking over in 2017.

LEGACY LIGHTNING

Coach: Mark Glen (fifth season)

Last year: Finished 14th at 5A state tournament

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Izzy Hebert (Sr.).

Outlook: The Lightning has one returning varsity player this season and that is senior Izzy Hebert. Although Hebert didn't qualify for the regional team last season, Coach Glen says she has the skills and scores jump that level and to make it state this year. In what otherwise figures to be a rebuilding year for the Lightning, six new players are joining the program and the team will be looking for its junior varsity players to step up into bigger roles.

MONARCH COYOTES

Coach: Michael Riley (19th season)

Last year: Finished 11th at 5A state tournament

Returning state qualifiers: Carly Gallant (Sr., 25th); Emma Teuton (Sr., 40th).

Others to watch: Gabby Ferro (Sr.); Liina Neitenbach (Sr.,); Anna Nickerson (Sr.); Olivia Parsons (Sr.).

Outlook: Returning four starters and three other seniors, the Coyotes like their chances of defending the Front Range League title. Gallant and Teuton are both returning players who will lead the team with their state tournament experience. With at least two players who should regularly shoot in the 70s and an abundance of maturity, this year's team has the type of potential the Colorado prep golf scene has come to expect from a Monarch group.

NIWOT COUGARS

Coach: Ed Weaver (first season)

Last year: Finished third at 4A Northern regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Avery-Grace Blanco (Sr.); Mya Ostrom (Jr.); Sarah Scharff (Sr.).

Outlook: This should be a rebuilding year for the Cougars, who have a new coach, no returning state qualifiers and a season-ending injury to their projected number one player. However, Weaver expects the girls to continually improve throughout the season and despite the team's early challenges, has set a goal of sending several individuals to the state tournament.

PEAK TO PEAK PUMAS

Coach: Missy Schreiner (seventh season)

Last year: Finished 23rd at Metro-West regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Myranda Bell (Sr.); May Canales (So.); Samantha Pursley (Sr.).

Outlook: May Canales was the team's breakout player last season, qualifying for the varsity team as a freshman. The Pumas are expecting her to continue her early improvement while a number of other returning players like seniors Myranda Bell and Samantha Pursley do the same. Last year's regional tournament was a learning experience for the Jaguars, one they hope better prepared them for this season.

SILVER CREEK RAPTORS

Coach: Ryan Williams (first season)

Last year: Finished fourth at 4A Northern regional

Returning state qualifiers: None.

Others to watch: Kendra Green (Jr.); Amelia Haines (Sr.); Taylor Sandal (Jr.).

Outlook: This year's team will have a new coach as Ryan Williams, who also coaches the Raptors boys team, joins the fold. Graduating 2016 BoCoPreps.com Golfer of the Year Erin Sargent after last season leaves a pretty big hole to be filled atop the Raptors lineup. The Raptors do, however, have a number of talented upperclassmen who are ready to take on that challenge.

SKYLINE FALCONS

Coach: Cory Hoople (third season)

Last year: Finished fifth at 4A Northern regional

Returning state qualifiers: Audrey Gunlikson (So., 84th); Grace Gunlikson (Sr., t30th).

Others to watch: Lexi Ekern (So.); Kenna Peterson (Jr.).

Outlook: Senior Grace Gunlikson is the clear leader for the Falcons, as she is a four-year varsity player and two-time state qualifier. However, the Falcons have a well-rounded team this season and are excited to see what sophomore Audrey Gunlikson can do after qualifying for state as a freshman last year. After the Gunlikson sisters, the Falcons have several returning varsity players who are ready to make their mark.
