PUEBLO - Julia Pentz wasn't going to let the third set that had haunted Niwot all weekend come back into play.

The No. 2 singles player for the Cougars ended her season on a high note, beating Valor Christian's Darby Warburton 6-2, 7-6 (6) on Saturday to claim third place at the Class 4A girls tennis tournament at Pueblo City Park.

After falling to Cheyenne Mountain's Corey Patton Lossner in three sets during Friday's semifinals, Pentz was determined to bounce back in the third-place match.

"It was good to let (the semifinal) match go," Pentz said. "I'm a junior so I have next year too. That motivates me for next year and I thought it was a good win today."

It was the best finish at this year's tournament for Niwot. The No. 1 doubles team of Jewel Ng and Tehnley White fell to Discovery Canyon's Hunter Jones and Lizzy McCurdy and Amanda Duquette and Erin O'Neill lost to Durango's Lily Chick and Emily West.

The Cougars finished sixth overall as a team. Cheyenne Mountain won the team championship, its ninth-straight and 22nd overall in school history.
