DENVER — The second day of the Class 5A girls tennis state tournament was a lengthy affair for the Boulder No. 4 doubles pair.

Having not gotten to play their championship quarterfinal on Thursday, the Panthers duo of sophomores Emily Paul and Keeva Donohue played three matches and spent nearly 10 hours at Gates Tennis Center on Friday. But it was well worth the effort.

As a result of their big second day, Paul and Donohue have earned the opportunity to play in the third-place match at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

"It's been a great day," Paul said. "This is my first year playing competitive tennis and my first time to state, so it's been really fun. Having a chance to play at state and get either third or fourth is awesome. It'll be fun to see what happens tomorrow.

"My goal this season was just to make varsity, so this is pretty great."

The Panthers pair began its day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lakewood's Gabriella Bowles and Lauren Rice in the championship quarterfinals that started at 7:30 a.m. Paul and Donohue then fell 7-6, 6-2 in the championship semifinals.

Even in the semifinal loss, their chemistry was on display and Paul and Donohue rebounded to win 6-7, 7-1, 6-2 over Denver East's Tess Tobias and Ellie Wells in the consolation semifinals. Paul and Donohue will face Chatfield's Tedy Reed and Lizzy Crane for third place on Saturday.

"Playing in this heat, we get really tired but I think it's been more of a mental game that we were able to overcome today," Donohue said. "We're totally physically and mentally tired. But we pushed through it and came through in the end, and I'm really proud of what we did."

At No. 2 doubles, Denali Pinto and Katie Hirasaki also won two consolation matches and will play for third on Saturday, defeating the Fruita Monument pair 6-1, 6-1 and the Ponderosa pair 6-2, 6-3 on Friday.

Fairview's Rachel Heilbronner and Kylie Feliciano were eliminated in the first consolation round of the No. 1 doubles bracket. Emily Bechtel and Cassie Harper were eliminated in the second consolation round of the No. 3 doubles bracket.
