DENVER — Jumping up the Broomfield girls tennis team lineup from No. 2 doubles to No. 3 singles this season, Eagles sophomore Allyson Horvath didn't shy away from setting high goals for herself.

To her, that meant qualifying for the Class 5A state tennis tournament.

Horvath did that, and then some. At Gates Tennis Center on Thursday, the Eagles sophomore not only took the court but also won her first match to reach the championship quarterfinals in her first state tournament appearance.

"It has gone really great for my first year being here," Horvath said. "I'm really excited for where I've gotten. I didn't really know what to expect, but I knew everyone here would be more competitive."

Horvath defeated Arapahoe junior Elle Palmer, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round. Once she reached the quarterfinals, Horvath fell 6-3, 6-3 to Mountain Vista's Sammy Bheemireddy. Horvath will now have to sit and wait to see if Bheemireddy can continue winning and give her a shot at playback matches and third place.

But even if her state tournament run ends on Friday morning, Thursday's action was a landslide victory in Horvath's mind.

"After playing doubles last year, I wanted to try singles this year," Horvath said. "That was my goal and I did it. I was a little nervous coming to state for the first time but all the girls have been really nice and I've had a great time so far. I hope I get a chance to play again tomorrow."

At No. 2 singles, Eagles junior Ana Horvath fell to Regis Jesuit's Miki Erickson, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. At No. 1 doubles, Eagles Sydney Ho and Olivia Belton also fell in the first round, 6-4, 6-2 to Cherry Creek's Allison Murphy and Emily Wilkins while Eagles No. 3 doubles duo Meghan Roylance and Ellie Penner fell in the first round 6-1, 6-1 to Ponderosa's Jenna Lowe and Alyssa Lowe.

Boulder's No. 4 doubles duo of Keeva Donahue and Emily Paul picked up a quality state tournament victory, defeating Arapahoe's Kaylee Whitehouse and Betting Meske, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

The defending state champion Fairview Knights, who qualified players in all seven ladder spots, had an up and down day and finished with a team-wide record of 6-5 on the day. No Knights player advanced past the quarterfinals on Thursday. But since not all quarterfinal matches were finished, Emily Bechtel and Cassie Harper still have a chance at No. 3 doubles.

The remaining No. 3 and No. 4 doubles second-round matches will be played at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
