PUEBLO - A one and done day is not exactly how Mead envisioned its first-ever trip to the Class 4A state tennis tournament.
The No. 2 doubles team of Kylie Park and Sydney Boaz fell in their match, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Pueblo West's Alyssa Suazo and Kyra Jensen.
Still, getting to the tournament was an experience they'd never forget, even if it seemed like a little much to take in for first-timers.
"It was definitely exciting," Boaz said. "It was new; it was something our school had never done before. It was a little nerve-racking, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was exciting when we got here and finally got to play, it was a lot of fun."
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the trip was the fact that Boaz's left hand was broken and she was forced to play with a cast on her arm. But the senior wasn't going to let anything stop her from taking the court at state, even if her style had to adjust a little.
"The only limitation I had was that I started with a two-handed backhand and for obvious reasons I had to change to one," she said. "It was a little bit of a struggle, but for the most part, Kylie did a good job of covering my back hand and we worked well with it."
It was a tough day overall for area teams.
Niwot and Holy Family each finished the day with one semifinalist, but any other participants beyond that will be determined on the outcome of semis and who will be placed in the playback brackets after those.
Sophomore Taylor Thulson moved on to the semis in No. 2 singles for Niwot and the duo of An Tran and Brianna Bartlett reached the No. 3 doubles semifinals for Holy Family.
The Cougars nearly had a second semifinalist, but Julia Pentz lost a three-set match to Pueblo West's Sara Schoenbeck.
"I think everybody played very well," Niwot coach Aimee Irwin said. "I'm hoping (Schoenbeck) can pull Julia back through tomorrow."
Tran and Bartlett cruised through their first round match against Aspen before facing a tough D'Evelyn duo of Maggie Hime and Rachael Molnar in the quarterfinals.
They were able to hold the Jaguars off 6-3, 7-5 to reach the semis and get a chance to return to the state title match, which they lost last year.
"We work great as a team," Bartlett said. "This is only our second year playing together as a team."
Peak to Peak and Dawson School each put up one win on the day, but both winners fell in the quarterfinals. Longmont's lone qualifier, the No. 3 doubles team of Kyra Foote and Melanie Reeves lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to Kent Denver.
After the first day, Cheyenne Mountain was the overall team leader with 21 points, winning every match they played in.
