LAFAYETTE -- One, two, shoot.
One, two, shoot.
That mantra was taken to the next level by Peak to Peak junior forwards Belle Morel and Kaja Lamvik on Saturday as each of them either scored, or assisted on, all of the Pumas' goals in a 4-1 victory over Lutheran in the second round of the Class 3A girls soccer state tournament.
"We played mostly one- and two-touch so it was great," Lamvik said. "We have played a lot of one-touch and two-touch lately in practice. We're definitely working on it. It always works when you're playing the ball quick."
The third-seeded Pumas (14-3) advanced to the state quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year behind two goals and two assists from Lamvik and two goals and two assists from Morel.
Peak to Peak will host the winner of the Denver Christian/The Classical Academy game on Thursday. Peak to Peak lost to TCA in last year's state title game, but came out victorious in the second game of this season by a 2-0 margin. Peak to Peak beat Denver Christian 3-0 on April 21.
It took Peak to Peak quite some time to put away No. 19 Lutheran (11-5-1), but the Pumas never felt threatened.
The Lions featured two speedy forwards in Shelby Raper and Kyla McHenry, and McHenry finally slipped behind Peak to Peak's defense and broke free for a goal to cut Peak to Peak's lead to 2-1 early in the second half.
With 26 minutes left on the clock, Pumas keeper Sarah Martinez prevented the equalizer with a leaping punch save off a header by Lutheran's Sarah Bergford.
And then the Lamvik-Morel combo deal struck for two goals in the last five minutes, three seconds.
"It was an unlucky goal and we were going to come to right back at it," Morel said of leading just 2-1 for much of the second half. "We did and we weren't too worried about it."
The Pumas were without their coach, quintuplet father Peter Chandler, who was out of state to attend his children's college graduations. He is also expected to miss Thursday's game plus the next one if Peak to Peak advances to the semifinals.
Fifth-year assistant coach Joe Swanson was busy texting Chandler during the game to keep his coach informed. It didn't serve as a distraction.
"The girls know me and we work really well together, as far as the coaches and stuff like that," Swanson said. "For us, at this stage of the game, we've gone through a full season, we just keep doing what we've been doing so it all works out pretty well."
