LONGMONT — As a freshman last year, Silver Creek's Andrew Wu held his own at the Class 4A state championships.

It was a fast pool, but Wu still managed to place 10th in the 100 breaststroke in 2016. Early on in his sophomore season, Wu was tossed right into another fast pool at the Dick Rush Coaches Invitational on Saturday.

At the combined 5A and 4A early-season meet, Wu, a sophomore at Niwot High School, placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke with at time of 1 minute, 3.08 seconds to help the Silver Creek Raptors win the 4A team title.

"I guess my times were pretty good and I'm off to a good start," Wu said. "I think I can still drop a lot of time going into state in the next couple months. There were a lot of fast people there so it was fun to swim against the 5A champions and having fast people next to you really helps to hit some good times."

Wu also said he is hoping to drop up to four seconds from this weekend's time, which should land him on the state podium if he can pull it off. As a team, the Raptors surprised head coach Debbie Stewart with their overall performance.

"We haven't done the Coaches for the past few years because we had a lot of club swimmers out of the state this weekend," Stewart said. "So it was kind of exciting to go back and swim this meet again. Even the guys were saying I wasn't giving them as much credit as they thought they should get when we were looking at the psyche sheet. It takes a lot of pressure off them going into spring break and we can just work really hard when they get back and not have to taper to get those state cuts late in the season.

"I've never had this many state qualifiers this early in the season and we got quite a few new ones. So, getting them right away at the beginning of the season is pretty exciting."

Fairview's Duncan Lester scored a 477.10 to win the one-meter diving competition. His first-place finish helped the Knights finish sixth in the overall team competition with 161 points.

Broomfield was 16th with 68 team points and Boulder scored 49 points to take 21st.
