BOULDER — Friday evening marked the start of a weekend that had already seen most of its prep sports action preemptively wiped out by an anticipated rain and snow storm.
The Boulder County Invitational swim meet took a significant hit to its field of participants because of the weather, particularly when the St. Vrain Valley School District cancelled all activities for Saturday. Still, Friday's diving competition provided a needed platform for a handful of local divers to get in an 11-dive meet and hit state qualifying scores.
Despite battling an illness, Fairview's Duncan Lester still managed to pick up another impressive victory with a score of 480.68 at South Boulder Recreation Center.
"I'm a little sick so it wasn't my best meet but it's good to get a win under my belt," Lester said. "I did a lot better at my last meet. I was just a little off on some dives today but I didn't have any big misses to it was good to stay consistent."
In his only other 11-dive competition this season, Lester scored a personal-best 538.50 to place second at the Coaches Invitational. While Friday wasn't quite as spectacular of an encore, Lester said he was grateful just to get a chance to compete and notch another state qualifying mark despite the weather.
"I've only had one other 11-dive meet this season and 11-dive meets are always good experience so it was great to get this one in," Lester said.
Lester wasn't the only diver to take advantage of the Boulder County diving competition surviving the impending storm. All four other competitors hit state-qualifying marks.
Longmont's Cooper Welsh was second with a 377.24, Silver Creek's Ashton Hubert was third with a 297.59, Silver Creek's Ben Willett scored a 296.62 and Longmont's Calib Young scored a 293.55. All four scores were well above the Class 4A cutoff of 270.
"I thought Duncan did really well today," Fairview head coach Amy Webb said. "He is feeling a little bit under the weather but he is just getting stronger and stronger as he goes. At the Coaches Invite, he was spectacular and I can't wait for state. I am thrilled that we were able to get all of those kids an 11-dive meet. We don't often have those opportunities for them so I was really happy."
The swimming portion of the Boulder County Invitational will take place on Saturday, though it is unclear in what capacity since none of the St. Vrain Valley School District teams will be there.
